Boston hotels for fall 2013

No, not for Nationals . A friend and her family (2 adults and 2 children) are coming to New England this fall. Are there any sites they should look into besides the usual tripadvisor, hotels.com, etc? I never had to book hotels around the area since I live here, so I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing out on some new great sites.

The Boston Convention & Tourist Bureau should be a good place to start. It's bostonusa.com. The site's Where to Stay link lists hotels, B&Bs, and short term rentals.

I bet you've already told them to avoid 8/31-9/2 (college drop off and everyone else moves) and the following weekend with the Jimmy Fund walk. Best is after the 15th as all the parents staying in town to get their snowflakes settled will have packed up and left. Oh, and all the newbies may have figured out their routes, so traffic might be better.

Check the rates for the Langham Hotel (which was the Le Meridien long, long ago). Historic, older hotel with gigantic rooms (perfect for a family sharing one room, as you indicated) that sells at a discount to newer, trendier, more modern hotels. Can't beat the location in the middle of Post Office Square. Stayed here several times on business for a $150-200/night corporate rate when everything else around was going for $350-400/night. Even if not staying, it's worth checking their murals (it was previously the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, which is now that white monstrosity looming over South Station) and the historic Map Rooms / bars inside.

My dad uses a similar Priceline/Hotwire bidding comparison site and swears by it: www.betterbidding.com
You can always refer them to www.airbnb.com if they're staying for a longer period.
Not sure of the ages and desires (are we talking small children or adult children?), the new hostel on Stuart St has private rooms and looks super-trendy (and I keep meaning to check out their events in their first floor bar) http://bostonhostel.org/

Kids are around 5 and 3, so definitely on the small side. I forwarded the nice airbnb apt that you sent me to my friend, so we'll see what she thinks. Plenty of options now !

With children that small, they might want to consider the John Jeffries House on Beacon Hill. It's a short walk to the Esplanade playground and an even shorter walk to the T.
