Interview with Gracie Gold's coach, Alexander Ouriashev (nothing really new so I decided to put it in here): http://web.icenetwork.com/news/artic...&vkey=ice_news

USFS tweeted 2 photos of Gracie during an NBC film shoot in LA today:

^^ Looks like NBC is kicking off their love affair with Gracie early. Something tells me they are going to be promoting the hell outta of her in the coming months. She didn't do very well under the pressure this season so hopefully by next season she will have adjusted enough to handle it...and given how excited they were about her during this year's nationals, I can only imagine how much fluff and hype we'll see/hear next year.

Christina Gao tweeted she is in LA... I assume the top U.S. ladies will all be doing promotional photo & media shoots for Sochi this week, including Ashley Wagner since her next SOI tour stop isn't until Friday night. NBC also filmed promos of Davis/White yesterday (links are posted in the D/W fan thread).

Davis/White are the flagship for US skating (the only world medalists in God knows how long) so that makes sense.

But did Gao say she was in LA to shoot for NBC? This seems a bit odd especially seeing as she's been the 5th ranked skater in the nation for the past few years. I'd think they would call Zawadski or even Hicks before they call Christina. When was the last time the media focused on someone other than the top 2 or 3?

The USFSA has never given Christina the time of day so if NBC is doing something for her then I say kudos to them. She should have been on the podium this year but the USFSA loves to screw her over so...

From Sarah and Drew's latest blog (focused on Ice Chips show) on IN: "Gao, Miner and the Shibutanis will be traveling to Los Angeles soon for the U.S. Olympic Committee media summit."

I guess it's a pre-media summit. Or maybe it's just for figure skating. The official Team USA summit doesn't take place until the end of September.

Anyhoo, I'd love to see Christina get some recognition so if she is there for a photoshoot/TV spot I'm happy. She has improved a lot over the years and her maturity and consistency seemed to go unnoticed this year. I hope she has a real breakout season this fall.

The gathering in L.A. this week is for Team USA Sochi Olympic hopefuls in all winter sports - I started a thread in Other Sports last night (and can start a new thread in GSD as soon as the figure skaters' photos show up): http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/show...t-Hollywood-CA

ETA: I checked the FSU Archives and the pre-Vancouver Games USOC photo shoot in L.A. was held in May 2009 and featured the top 5 ladies at 2009 Nationals -- Czisny, Flatt, Zhang, Wagner, and Nagasu.

Aaah...well there you go. Hey, I remember those pictures:

I do think they should focus on some of the up-and-comers too. Take advantage of the slightly brighter spotlight on the sport to push some of the new talent (Hicks, Miller, Wang, Long, etc.). I doubt if it would work but the plan would be to introduce these newbies to the public in the hopes that they (the public) might be interested in seeing what happens to their careers post Sochi.

    I can dream, can't I?

Yah, Sylvia's right, nothing new here. All politically correct answers and obvious sucking up to USFS. What else is new?

Although, it does look like he's singing the praises of Scott Brown, so maybe no changes there?

Found it odd that he compared Gracie's nationals program to the birth of a child?! This guy's kidding, right? Talk about over the top!

I would interpret it differently, I would say gracious answers by a very dedicated coach.

But I agree Scott Brown is still in the picture, I was hoping someone with more top caliber experience would be the main choreographer. Carmalengo was mentioned, did he do some of her choreography? If it's Brown again this year, I hope he got the memo that the boob shaking and marching were not so well received.

Pasquale Camerlengo has worked with Gold in the past (I believe he choreographed her FS to "The Mission" that she used for her 2 Junior seasons).

Here's the thread in GSD for the Team USA figure skaters' media shoots in L.A. this week: http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/show...-photos-in-L-A (ETA: Agnes' and Christina's USOC portrait photos are linked from there)

Gracie's twitter profile pic is too cute! Features a smiling Liza and Adelina.

Perhaps they are grooming her for that 3rd spot next year. Christina has much more of a graceful presence than the current 3rd and 4th place finishers.

I guess I should have specified gold but yeah, a medal would suffice:

No medal for US pairs since Ina/Zimmerman back in 2002...

No medal for ladies since Kimmie/Sasha in back 2006...

No medal in men's since Evan in 2009...

Davis/White are the only US skaters who have had a consistent presence on the podium at worlds for this last quadrennial. The Shibutanis placed 3rd two years ago but haven't medaled since...

Ashley Cain, Nina Jiang and Barbie Long are competing their short programs later today at the Skate Dallas club competition. Cain is debuting her Flamenco SP, Jiang is skating last season's Tango SP with a few changes, and Long reportedly has 2 new programs and is staying Junior in the U.S. this season.

Thank you for the info, Sylvia. I'm rather surprised that Long will stay junior for a third year, but obviously she and her team know best.

Several of the girls who have been junior for a while are hanging back and I think it's smart. I don't think they will gain the recognition they need if they debut next season...everyone will be too focused on the big names as they head to Sochi. Debuting seniors will be an afterthought...

After Sochi there is going to be a rather large changing of the guard with pretty much all of the top names retiring (Yu-Na, Carolina, Akiko, possibly Mao, Kanako, Kiira). They'll be able to come in fresh...

LOL. The season just ended. I'd forgotten about Nina Jiang. She has talent and I'd like to see her realize it on the ice.

Just a reminder: if you're in the Twin Cities this weekend, Agnes Zawadzki will be skating at the Coon Rapids Ice Center tonight (4/27) at 6:30 p.m. and tomorrow (4/28) at 2:00 p.m. She will skate two programs both days.

Tickets for the show are $7/adults; $5 students/seniors, and can be purchased at the door.
