Is Andrea Poapst still skating? She's a Canadian, though she's been in the States for a while now. Skated pairs with Chris Knierim. She's quite an elegant skater IIRC.

I thought Purich & Tran's Life is Beautiful program was nice when I saw it at Nationals this year. They had a couple problems, but managed to finish a strong 4th behind L&S. I thought they had potential. But after reading the posts above, it seems like Purich was unhappy and wrote about it on Facebook, etc. I guess it shows how an audience can never tell how a pair will turn out.

Yes, I'd agree with this. If Rau is only 15, then she could use the time to continue to develop and get some jumps. Maybe a change of venue to Montreal to Gauthier would help. She has good role models with MT/M now, but could learn other things from role models like D/R. In truth, I haven't been following pairs too closely this year, and Rau changed a lot physically. I didn't recognize her at Nationals. Maybe the answer is just a few extra years at Junior. And perhaps Purich and Schultz would be a good team. It would be kinda funny really. I remember Natasha skated with a Raymond Schultz. Natasha and Rob Schultz would be a good physical match, I think. As for Tran, maybe there is a strong singles skater at Junior or Senior, small in stature like a Duhamel, Moore-Towers, Rau, or Purich, who has always wanted to be a pairs skater.

If Rau wants jumps she's going to need to move to another coach. The Wirtzs can't teach jumps. None of the girls who started young with them have them. KMT came with hers. When my DD skated there she attributed the triples she mastered to Moscovitch and Garnet Suidy as well as to repeatedly watching Yagudin's jumps on video, not to the Wirtzs at all.

Of course, the fact he's from my home town makes his a sentimental favourite to keep around.
Read an article in a local paper this week about their club's upcoming end of season show at their new rink in Komoka. Michael talked about preparing for next season. No suggestion of the two of them not skating. The photo of them reminded me of what a beautiful couple they are. I hope they can settle into the senior ranks and grow as a team.

Not true - AFAIK, Purich was always focused on singles. One of her coaches had her try pairs and she did both for awhile but was mostly interested in singles. Only after some good success did she opt for pairs (and somewhat begrudgingly).

^ Interesting, I thought in previous years' interviews they'd suggested that their target was Sochi, after which they'd retire. It would be great if they stayed in. Not sure how they can solve their consistency issues, though.

I think L/S's target was Sochi and that if they missed making the team, they'd stop skating, but I don't remember them saying it was a Sochi and done.

They seem to have really struggled with injury these last few years - her concussion, then more injury this year. I would love to see them do at least one more year if they are healthy and injury free. It is hard to skate your best when you can't put the training in.

Trennt Michaud (medaled in novice with Judith Murtha-Anderson in 2013) has paired up with Hope McLean and they're training with Mike and Margaret/ Scott & Ali at the London Competitive Skating Centre (formerly the Competitive Skating Centre of Strathroy).

When I saw Paige & Rudi interviewed on CBC by Scott Russell in Japan last week they didn't confirm definitely one way or another what they were doing. Didn't say they were continuing or retiring. Perhaps they need some time in the off-season to asses her injury and determine the best option for them.

Any current stats on these two?

I should have said this more clearly.....what I was trying to say was that someone needs to look in the singles ranks for someone small in stature like Purich, MT, Duhamel and Rau. And maybe there is someone, in addition to being small, who also always wanted to be a pairs skater. I know in the dance side of things there are lots of girls who would love to do ice dance, but there are not enough boys, nevermind suitable boys. So they skate singles while they wait and look.

tell me Sebastian Arcieri will be skating with Shalena Rau in Waterloo with the Wirtzes. Shame because I had hoped perhaps she would break away from that school and really achieve all she's capable of. Joining Gauthier's camp would have been an awesome opportunity for her though she is still pretty young to leave home. I've also heard that Rob Schultz will be skating with Natasha Purich and that they are likely to train in Montreal. No confirmation of that rumour though.

It's too bad that Purich & Tran decided to end their partnership after only one season. Finishing 4th at your first Nationals as a team is pretty good.

Considering he's a former World medalist, it will come as a surprise to skating fans if he's the one who ends up without a partner or retires.

    Btw, here's Mervin's Twitter:

    So the new teams are:

    Rau & Arcieri

    Purich & Schultz

Hope it works out for Tran to find a suitable partner. I can't think of anyone that is partnerless that he would fit with though.

If these teams have really formed in excited for them. Rau/Arcieri would do well at jr and would give a year to see if her jumps can develop further. Purich/Schultz would look great together and should have 2 strong triples. We need a team with good jumps developing for the future pairs in Canada. Not sure what to say about Tran. Sadly not sure there are any cdn girls for him.
