I did the day trip to Tallinn on the ferry from Helsinki this summer and thought it was beautiful. Very well-preserved old town and I did a really enjoyable bike tour to see beyond the old town. Kadriorg (Catherine the Great's castle) was a particular highlight.

If I could pick one city to go back to in Europe, it would be Berlin, the sheer amount of things to do there is amazing and there is so much history there that I feel like I barely scratched the surface. I loved Budapest as well and it was probably the most affordable European city I've been to. I was there with a friend who was living in Bulgaria at the time and she described Budapest as combining Bulgarian prices with Western European sophistication. Even the places that were described as having "touristy prices" by locals weren't that bad...it just meant they weren't as cheap as the non-touristy ones.

Another vote for Bruges, it's within reasonable striking distance of Cologne.

You guys were great! Thank you.

After much painstaking consideration - and a few changes/additions with other travel plans this year - I'm stillllll... undecided

Oh well - planning a big trip is exciting in itself
