Unhappy List of withdrawals now includes Vanessa Lam

@icenetwork just tweeted: " Senior ladies competitor Vanessa Lam has withdrawn from the 2013 U.S. Championships because of knee and hip injuries."

I believe an invitation has been extended to first alternate Laney Diggs.

ETA link to a press release about Lam's withdrawal that was submitted to my blog: http://unseenskaters.wordpress.com/2...due-to-injury/

    Rest of the withdrawals:

Evan Lysacek (Sr Men) - 1/18/13 press release: http://www.usfsa.org/Story.asp?id=48896&type=media

Alissa Czisny (Sr Ladies) - 1/14/13 press release: http://www.usfsa.org/Story.asp?id=48878&type=media

Johnny Weir (Sr Men) - 12/7/12 press release: http://www.usfsa.org/Story.asp?id=48764&type=media

Caydee Denney/John Coughlin (Sr Pairs) - 12/5/12 press release about his hip surgery: http://www.usfsa.org/Story.asp?id=48740&type=media

Caitlin Yankowskas/Joshua Reagan (Sr Pairs) - WD as of 1/8/13

Rachel Parsons/Michael Parsons (Jr Dance) - he reportedly has a leg or foot injury

Note: The new fill-up rule for pair and dance teams does not apply because there are now 12 Junior dance teams at Nationals (due to Aldridge/Eaton's JGPF bye). If there had been 11, I believe the 5th place Jr. dance team at Pacific Coasts could have replaced Parsons/Parsons.

After 2012 Skate America, Rachael Flatt announced she would sit out the rest of the 2012-13 season - 10/30/12 press release: http://www.usfsa.org/Story.asp?id=48610&type=news

Too bad about Vanessa Lam. I wish her a speedy recovery--such an accomplished young woman.

So it's too late for Laney Diggs to get Vanessa's spot?

I've heard that Laney Diggs will be going to Omaha to replace Vanessa Lam. Diggs' last trip to Nationals was in 2010 when she placed 15th in Senior. She is now 20 years old and a full-time college student at the University of California at Berkeley (Class of 2014) where she is active on Cal's figure skating team. She finished 7th at the Collegiate Championships this past August.

ETA video of Diggs performing to a song from "Wicked" in the Bay Area Figure Skating Celebration at Union Square, San Francisco, on January 9, 2013: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZAGodjUhMk

I am sad that Vanessa will not be competing. I love her FS and I really thought she could have made a run for the podium in Omaha.

Yay, that's great news that she was able to make all of the arrangements in time!

Vanessa improved on her performances and scores from the JGP in Courchevel this past August in winning both her Regional in October and Sectional in November with the highest total scores of all the Senior Ladies that competed, so it's a shame she won't get a chance to "redeem" herself in Omaha.

    ETA:
Nothing against Diggs, and scores aren't directly comparable across competitions, but Lauren Dinh (135.68) and Carly Gold (124.28) both had higher 5th place scores at Easterns and Mids, respectively, than Diggs at Pacifics (120.78). Jenelle Herman (121.58) was 6th at Easterns.

    Via US Figure Skating's tweet:

Dalia Rivkin (Novice Ladies), coached by Julia Lautowa, has withdrawn - she's listed #10 in today's SP starting order so will not be replaced.

This is a bummer. She's kind of a sloppy skater, but it's impossible to take your eyes off of her.

Sad to hear about another injury, but thrilled for Laney.

    Leah

At least her JGP Turkey gold will get her funding for next season and making the JGPF should be more than enough to get her back on the JGP next season.
