"Randy [Starkman (1960-April 16, 2012)] lived by the same motto as the rest of us. The Olympics isn’t every four years, it’s every single day. He just got it." --Canadian Olympic kayaker Adam van Koeverden
Good luck to all the skaters and hope they all skate well.

Garrett Gosselin article I enjoyed reading: http://www.leaderpost.com/sports/Gar...812/story.html
ETA an article in which it was stated that Roman Sadovsky's withdrawal from the Junior Men's event was due to a stress fracture in his foot: http://www.yorkregion.com/sports/art...tress-fracture"There's a fine line between pushing yourself so far that it's unrealistic and not really enjoying it versus pushing yourself just enough so that you can still enjoy it and be happy with whatever happens," he said.
Gosselin said he was flirting with that line. It's understandable. It's one thing for this to be his first year competing at the senior men's level, but it's added stress when it'll also be his debut on national television for the entire country to see his every success or his every fall.
"I'm really nervous, but I think it's just because I don't want to let myself down," he said. "I want to prove to myself that even when times are stressful or frustrating like they are right now that I can still brush it off. Even if I'm not absolutely on fire on competition day, I can still turn it around and prove to myself that I belong here and that I'm happy with my skate.
"There's nothing worse than getting off the ice and just wanting to get back out there because you didn't give it your all."
...
Gosselin admitted [Kaetlyn] Osmond has a positive influence on him and his preparation for big events.
"She's human, and it was so good for me to see that," he said. "She makes just as many mistakes as I do, but she has a way of not really worrying about it. She doesn't dwell so much on the little things. She'll do 20 jumps and fall on 19 of them. But when she gets off the ice, she'll talk about how good that one jump was that she landed. I would be tearing myself apart and losing my mind, but she's the total opposite."

This is an interview I did with Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier a few weeks ago

Might not be a totally bad thing for Sadovsky to WD. He's done enough to probably get a JW spot along with Gordon although Kan is in the mix. But if he won this event he'd have to compete at nats in seniors next year. And he'd be what, 14?
Golden Skate is providing excellent coverage of the Novice & Junior events so far - link to all the recap articles: http://www.goldenskate.com/tag/2013-...championships/

I fully expect Nam Nguyen to get one of the Jr. World spots and as long as he skates relatively well here, Mitchell Gordon would get the other one, so I doubt Sadovsky will get to go to Jr. Worlds without having skated at Nationals (although he may not have gone anyway). He could get named as an alternate, though, because Sadovsky and Kan are the only other skaters who have been out on the junior circuit and therefore the only ones with the minimum TES scores. Even if there's a chance Sadovsky could have healed by then, SC should put him on the alternate list.
Good point. Maybe it's not such a bad thing to miss nationals this year after all. Hopefully the injury doesn't delay him too much going into the upcoming season. But if he won this event he'd have to compete at nats in seniors next year. And he'd be what, 14?

Bryce Davison as coach: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/figureskati...ating-pro.html
ETA article titled "Southpaw figure skaters face a different set of challenges":He's putting that experience to work to help some of the country's top young skaters, and so far his efforts have met with great success. Earlier this week, Hamilton's own Maysie Poliziani — one of Davison's students — won silver in the novice women competition at the championships, her first national competition.
"I'm very, very happy. It's not completely unprecedented, but it is kind of unheard of for a novice to get silver at her first nationals."
Another pair of skaters Davison coaches from Eastern Ontario, Judith Murtha-Anderson and Trennt Michaud, picked up silver in the novice pairs competition.
