    Schubert's Serenade

I recently heard Schubert's Serenade being played and thought it sounded so familiar, that it must have been used in skating. I found that Irina Slutskaya used it for her SP in the 2001-02 season. I just love this piece of music! Are there other skaters who have skated to it? I'm thinking there must be... anyone out there with a better memory than mine?

It's one of Schubert's most beautiful songs, isn't it? I can't think of anyone, other than Irina, who has skated to it.

AFAIK no one else has skated to it. I love this music. I wish more skaters would use it.

I did a search as well and can't seem to find other programs using Serenade. Unbelievable! I would have thought more skaters would have used it by now. It's such a fantastic piece of music.

I was very surprised myself that all I could find was Irina's SP. It seemed to me that a pair team skated to it. I started looking through some of my competition program books to see if it was listed as a music selection. Nothing yet. Now I wish someone would use it, particularly the violin version by Joshua Bell. It is haunting and beautiful, IMO.

I found this lower level (may be intermediate?) skater Maria Andrea skating to this music. It sounds like she may be from Argentina.

There is a montage of Yu na Kim, with Schubert's Serenade in the background. Obviously this is not the music she skated to at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

This one's not skating related, but the photography is so beautiful that I just had to post it.

Thanks Maofan! Do you know when they skated to this music? It seems like early in their career, from the way they are skating in this video.

Among current skaters, I think this music will suit Mao Asada, and may be Patrick Chan.

Unfortunately not, but I think you are probably right in your estimation time wise.

A Korean girl also skated to this at 4CCs. The girl who did a flying layback.

Are you referring to this skater?

This song is one of my favorites too. I'd love to see more skaters use it.

Thank you SO VERY MUCH for opening this thread. I love this piece of music and it’s one of my favourite programmes from Irina and one of my favourite figures skating memories ever.

I really feel for her when she is talking about the judging at SLC before they showed her SP, I’ll never understand why she was not in first place after the LP in SLC.

    I miss her!

So true. One of the most beautiful songs ever written; works in arrangement, as well. So many people use Liszt's Liebestraume, but this is just as beautiful.
Klimova/ Ponomarenko- was hard for me, as much as I love them, because they changed the meter from 3/4 to 4/4, and it's very different.
My favorite version, apart from singing ( I am partial to 1951 recording to Fischer- Dieskau, because it is so simple, http://youtu.be/DgbNOMtsm2Q ), would the Liszt's piano transcription, but there are also great orchestra recording, which are easier for skating http://youtu.be/KhaYZMnbXiQ
It is the easiest to imagine Pair skaters performing to it, though singles are certainly possible.

I looked for this thread tonight because this morning I attended a memorial service for a Toastmaster friend, at one of the most beautiful sanctuaries here. The program started with Schubert's Serenade being played on a piano. It was out of this world, and is clearly one of the most beautiful pieces of music, ever. I loved Irina's SP skated to this, but I still cannot find anyone else (at world level) skating to it. IMO Mao could do justice to this.

ETA: Just wanted to add that I had heard this music played on violin, but at the memorial service it was played on a piano, and it was absolutely gorgeous. I wonder if it was originally written for violin or piano? (I am getting OT here)
