2014 Canadians will be in Ottawa

It appears that this announcement will be made tomorrow, at least according to this article: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/...651/story.html

Scotiabank Place? That is a venue which would really need shuttle bus!

The old city arena was in a much better location in downtown Ottawa, but I don't think they ever want a repeat of 2006 Canadians with insulation snowing from the ceiling during the programs. There's enough pressure in an Olympic qualifying competition.

Is this the third year in row that Ontario has had Nats?

    This is intriguing:

with Mayor Jim Watson to be joined by Skate Canada president Benoît Lavoie of Beauport, Que., Ottawa-area skaters and representatives of a new title sponsor.
Will be curious to see who has signed on as a title sponsor.

That year (2014) is the 100th anniversary of Canadians. There was an article on the Skate Canada website a while ago. The first Canadians were in Ottawa so it makes sense they would have the 100th there. Some top skaters went to parliament for a press conference and Skate Canada asked the Canadian government for ten million dollars for the event and a year of celebrations. This was a while ago.
Here is the link to the press conference:
    http://www.skatecanada.ca/AboutUs/Ne...tabid/2157/sni[2797]/2216/language/en-US/Default.aspx
Here is the link to the presentation (the money part is on the last page)

    http://www.skatecanada.ca/AboutUs/Ne...tabid/2157/sni[2797]/2277/language/en-US/Default.aspx

So it looks like the Canadian government would be a major sponsor.

It was just posted as I checked my post! The title sponsor is Canadian Tire.

Here's the official announcement article: http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/981166

"Canadian Tire Nationals" (from 2014 through 2018) plus two other new sponsors.

There is a major redevelopment of the Lansdowne Park area in Ottawa that has resulted in the demolition of the Civic Centre. I attended the 1978 and 1984 Worlds there plus several Canadians. Lots of "strange" incidents over the years there, including rampaging "wildlife" (squirrels)

Hmmmm ... Ottawa in 2014 could be ... interesting. Not sure if I'd want to drive from home to Ottawa but it would be handy to have my own vehicle to get out to the boonies where the rink is located.

Ottawa was one city I would consider lifting my current ban on all Ontario events, but with me going to NB for SC (and PEI and NS--can't wait!!!) I probably won't go...unless flights are really cheap. Or if Chan or V&M's new programs are just so outstanding I'd like to see them again live.

All of Lansdowne Park is being redeveloped. Their is lots of parking and the bus service does runs from the arena. There are also a couple of hotels nearby. I will definitely be going!

For anyone wanting a hotel near the arena-The Country Inn on Terry Fox drive is definitely walkable (about 20 minutes or less). Next closest is the Holiday Inn Kanata (35 minutes walking). Both are close to the mall, which has lots of restaurants and such. There's not much else of interest in Kanata. Downtown is much more interesting, of course, and if you rent a car it's easy enough to get to Scotiabank Place. Public transit comes all the way out to Kanata too.

If you want one of the close hotels- I'd book early- I imagine they will fill up quickly.

There's also a Comfort Inn in Hearst Drive in Kanata, but walking from there is 45 minutes- maybe a bit much in January? But easy enough in a car/public transit.

    That's putting it mildly

I'm glad Nationals has found another sponsor, but did it have to be the chain store that sells the worst beginner skates anywhere? Maybe the sponsorship will inspire Canadian Tire to step up their skate offerings.

Ottawa (the city) is a great place to visit. It's a place where there's a beautiful memorial dedicated to the animals who lost their lives in service to the troops over the entrance of the war memorial room.
