    How will the world end?

Well, according to the Mayans, the world will end in 8 days time. But, the big question is, how will it end?

I'm betting on an asteroid strike

This poll will remain open for 7 days, until the eve of the big event.

Guess the 2014 Olympics is off then!

The sun will burn out at some point in the far distant future. I don't know if the world will last that long, but doubt its end is imminent.

The end of the world as we know it is another thing. A cataclysmic event like running out of oil completely in the absence of alternative energy sources, or environmental degradation/food supply chain reaching a critical point, or an epidemic that threatens human kind could all mean the end of the world as we know it.

But I think it's more possible that people will just change in response to changing circumstances and the conditions brought about by various disasters. If this process is slow, the world as we know it may change dramatically, but people won't really notice.

My prediction is nuclear war, but then I thought better of it. Johnny Weir will win the Olympics, and then the world will end....that will be in 2022.

I was torn between nuclear war and global warming, but ended up choosing global warming.

'Some say the world will end in fire, others say ice. From what I've tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire.'

Robert Frost aside, the Mayan calendar actually restarts, not ends, so apparently we'll all be sent back to the beginning.

(But seriously, the only ones of those that would actually END the WORLD would be the sun going nova, which WILL eventually happen, or a really freak sudden appearance of a black hole. The others are just mass extinction events. Not even that if the ice caps melted, there just the people who can't escape the really slow rise of sea level. The world is just a planet, and planets don't care about what's living on them.)

Well, the world ending is not the same as humanity ending, at least not to me. So for me, the world will clearly end when it is swallowed by the sun but humans (and I am sure all life) will end long before that as the heat becomes too much. As far as how do humans go extinct? Hmmm...most likely a comet strike or super volcano.

But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
    is also great
    And would suffice.

Plushenko will reveal that he is actually an alien overlord from the planet Skate, and he will go and bring his people to take over the world and turn it into a gigantic ice rink, sparing only those select few he deems worthy of his court.

Can you tell I don't take the end of the world stuff seriously?

I voted for zombies, but a robot revolution sounds fun too...

On another note, FSU don't have any zombie or robot revolution smilies (TAT doesn't count), but since the world is ending in about 12 days, it prolly doesn't matter...

A bolide was seen over my part of Sweden the other day, so obviously that (and the Geminids) has be the vanguard of a massive asteroid that's going to kill us all.

I chose other. The planets will align; some on one side of the sun, and the rest on the other side of the sun causing a pole shift. It will affect the gravitational pull and we'll all float around somewhere in the universe. The natural force of attraction that tends to draw the mass of the bodies together will fail. I always wanted to see first-hand the rings of Saturn.
