Meryl's challenges are absolutely surprising. I would never, ever, ever have guessed she had trouble with her vision, ever. She is totally unreal. I am often convinced she can't be completely human and that pretty much confirms it for me. She and Tessa sort of blow my mind with their grit.

Video near the end of practice, Charlie and Meryl skating individually and Meryl's trademark spiral at the very end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P81-S5FeLxg

    Her spiral position is lovely

I had no idea about her vision problems. I can't even imagine what it must be like to skate at the speed they do and have no depth perception. Meryl is some kind of skating superhero

Ahh, you got it! She faked us out at Nationals and didn't do the spiral so I put my camera away early this time.

I was at work today and the USA Today was open to a page about skating, like it knew I was going to walk in :p. Anywho, there was an article about Ashley. Huge beautiful picture of her, yet there wasn't one thing about Meryl and Charlie. I was willing to right it off as a fluke, perhaps they were just doing a personal piece on her, but next to the article about Ashley, was a small article about the Men's competition. They wrote about the Worlds scene and did the typical projections thing. I was so sad. We have Meryl and Charlie, but dance was completely left out. No pairs either.

I guess as an American I should be "grateful" skating was in a major news publication at all.

Hopefully I'm being unfair. I don't read the USA Today, maybe there was something in there about them on another day.

    Thank you for the videos!

I'm normally not a fan of full leg unitards, but Madison looks amazing in that. I feel like Johnny is somewhere smiling and approving her onesie.

I was taping hoping that Meryl and Charlie would do crossovers on their own around the rink, since their crossovers are so , but I ended up with Meryl's spiral instead. Not a bad deal at all.

Shan, I didn't notice the ending being different! It does look like Meryl has an extra movement, now that you mention it.

What a fantastic article, I'm glad they shared her vision struggles.

She does have a beautiful spiral.

Seriously...she's amazing. I work with kids with cerebral palsy related depth perception and even standing at platforms to catch trains is scary. I can't imagine doing what she does. There must have been an instant connection, because she had to put so much trust in Charlie from the very beginning. I've always thought he looked protective of her on the ice and it makes so much sense now. I can understand why Meryl didn't share her story. It's a significant disability and I think some could have had a hard time seeing her for who she is.

I feel the same way many of you do--Meryl is incredible. I am glad she opened up about this in his article, though I certainly understand why she would be reluctant about discussing it further. Unfortunately some people will just see the disability instead of the person (of which the disability is a part). She is so courageous to discuss this publicly and I believe her doing so will help other people living with disabilities. I also like how the article discussed how attentive Charlie is as a partner. I really like their relationship.

Good job on catching that spiral.
I'm not seeing the difference in the ending.

I assumed they would stay after the Olympic season. They've never said they were going to retire.

This really is a fantastic article!!

That also explains why I've always felt that in warm ups she seems to gently orbit around Charlie and he does most of the steering. She barely looks at other skaters. I have sooo much respect for her.

ITA!! It explains a lot of things that I've wondered about before.

I'm nervously excited for the SD in a few hours.

This news is making my week. I've always assumed they'd want to finish up school and start their careers. They seem like they have such a full life outside of skating. I'm glad they feel differently and are having fun.
