It isn't necessary, but it's often done in skating. It's not done in ice hockey, for example. Or football.
People throw in a nice comment about a person unlikely to win,place or show, from another club/city/country/state to make it seem like they are not a blatant hometown rooter; to give themselves more credibility.

I remember listening to PJ back in 07 and 08 and she was usually quite complimentary towards D/W. Now that D/W have beaten V/M and more than once, the compliments aren't as forthcoming and the uber wars have escalated. It's all about being threatened. And the situation will not be improving with the Olympic season next year. For sure its time to put the armor on!
ETA: Lately I've been thinking of us D/W fans as "teflon-coated". We've got to just let that crap slide right off us and enjoy our favorite team. D/W's skating and results speak for itself anyway.

Thanks so much!! I just love drawing Meryl. She has the perfect face for it and I get wildly carried away when I reach her hair.
I want to do one for Giselle, as well. I did something for DF last year. (Sometimes I think of going back and drawing something for every FD.)

I want to know more about Meryl's haircare routine.
Which products, which appliances, how she deals with humidity, anything and everything! I'd like to imagine if I just follow what she does, my hair will be just as fab -- although I know that will never happen.
