We always have that cranberry sauce that comes in the can. It sits on a little plate still in the can shape with the ridges on it. Nobody ever eats it and we mock it every year but it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it.

I am in China with one other American, who doesn't cook, and apparently ovens are the norm here, so I've been trying to think of what I can make. I think I can do stovetop stuffing and then mash some sweet potatoes with brown sugar (ginger brown sugar, but it should still be fine). Haven't seen any turkey here, but I might put chicken in the stovetop stuffing. Not sure what else to make where I actually know where to get the ingredients, but stuffing is totally my fave so I'll just be happy to have that, I think.
I'm going to three Thanksgiving meals - two dinners and one lunch. It's the best thing about being an expat - I get all the holidays! To add an Australian touch, this year I am taking strawberry pavlova and my partner is taking Coopers beer (South Australian). I am assuming we'll get turkey and pumpkin pie, even though the number of non-Americans usually outnumbers the number of Americans! We usually get quite the mish-mash of food. This is the first Thanksgiving that I will go to and eat meat.
My husband's family has had that tradition forever, except that they hack off slices and eat it. I have been trying to convert them for years to no avail, so we always have a can of jellied cranberry sauce sitting on a plate and a bowl of homemade cranberry relish because I refuse to give in and just give them the canned stuff.
Fortunately, my husband likes cranberry anything or the relish would go uneaten.
Oh, and my daughter, who is in charge of appetizers, is apparently making bacon-wrapped shrimp and some sort of meatballs, so add that to my list.

How could I forget the ambrosia? Add that to my list - my husband would kill me if it wasn't on the table.

My family is doing something different this Thanksgiving. We usually have the whole nine yards; turkey, dressing, giblet gravy, mashed potatos, green bean salad, cranberry sauce, rolls, etc. We're making it simple this Thanksgiving since we also usually have everything mentioned Christmas Day.
Our menu consists of Baked Ham, Pototato Salad and Baked Beans. For dessert, Sweet Potato Pie, Chocolate Pie and Carrot Cake.
