Zhenya made me cry; I feel so bad for him at this tough moment. I hate that Evgeny is in too much pain to compete, but he must focus on healing and rest now. He is still an amazing champion and a legend in his sport. Thanks for the good memories, Zhenya!

Yeah. I can only imagine what it took to pull off what he did in the team competition!

Did you see his fall in warm-up?

I saw it. It wasn't an outright splat, but he clearly was very uncomfortable after the axel attempt.

I just feel bad for Kovtun - I've been reading that Plushenko could have withdrawn after the team event and been replaced if he chose to.

it was awful for him to go out like that, but you can't possibly do more for a country than he has . russia would not have won gold in the team's comp without his help. is kovtun's fault that russia had only one spot for olys. he is one of the biggest legend in the sport.

Extremely disappointing even if not surprising. To look on the bright side, he gave us 2 more Olympics than most of us could have imagined possible and yet he stills leaves us wanting more. Thanks to Plushenko for the memories- love or hate, truly one of a kind.

Heart breaking. This morning when the NBCSN telecast started, they were really hyping up Plushenko, so I thought he was going to skate. Couple hours later when I looked up the results, I couldn't find his name until I got to the bottom with 'WD'

There still are many other skaters I like, so I will enjoy the competition. It's just not the same without Zhenya though.

This reminds me - although vaguely- of the withdrawal of Babilonia & Gardner at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, before the SP, in front of the home crowd. The positive side in Plushy's case is that he already has 4 Olympic medals- 2 gold, 2 silver. I don't think anybody can beat that.

Evgeni Plushenko: "I had no choice" - video interview & translation:
Russian figure skater Evgeny Plushenko told why he left the competition right before his turn and also told about his future plans.
"Unfortunately I had no choice. Used four painkillers yet they didn't help. But I still went to the end, tried my hardest, and went to the warm ups. Hoped that something magical would happen. It did happen in the team competitions, and I'm very happy about it.
But now for now I need to rest, recover, and continue my figure skating career as businessman or showman. Very sorry to my fans, but I want to stay a healthy man. Walk and move normally, because life doesn't stop here." said Plushenko

I think everyone would have questioned the authenticity of that, if Plush had withdrawn after the TE. He had a chronic injury, and like any other athlete he must have believed that he could skate through the pain. I don't feel bad for Kovtun. He was the one that could not win even 2 spots for Russian men at last year's worlds, and at the Europeans he showed once again that he cannot handle pressure. He may learn it some day, but right now Russia had no one but Plushenko to represent them. They all took a gamble.

Isu people were already saying he couldn't withdraw after team without them being suspicious and they wouldn't have allowed a replacement because if their suspicions probably.

Michael Weiss' point wasn't lost on me...

This is a relief. Doing the team event alone would've been ideal, but since the rules stated that the same skater needed to do both I'm glad he just stuck to it and tried to the bitter end. On NBCSN he said he was sorry to the fans, but he's human and not a robot and he tried his best but it happens. He retired 8 years ago! Nothing to apologize for.

That triple axel he got injured on was fully rotated too lol. Good technique to the end.

ZHENYA...I've been a fan since he won his first World medal in 1998. I can't believe his competitive career lasted so long...and yet I can't believe it's over now. Truly the end of an era. My heart breaks. Thank you, Zhenya, for all the wonderful moments you've given us.

Kurt said today that is what he wanted to do (said in press conference apparently) but was told that he could not. He was the Russian man and had to skate the individual competition.

I'm sorry he wasn't able to skate in the individual event, but I hope he has no regrets. He's an amazing skater who has had an amazing career, most skaters would kill for a career just half as successful as his. The longevity of Plushenko's career is astonishing, especially when you consider that whenever he competed he was always amongst the very top skaters in the world.

Anyway, hope he takes care of himself, is able to enjoy spending time with his family and is able to fully enjoy the next stage of his career/life

I think that nothing he would do in the singles could compare to how awesome that whole team experience was. He skated above and beyond what many thought he could, his teammates were amazing, the arena was euphoric, Putin was on hand to congratulate them... what a high to go out on.

I won't remember him withdrawing in the individual event, but i will remember how he and everyone else skated in the team event on their way to Gold.
    What a great career.
