Interesting how no one gives credit to Plushenko due of his objections to lack of Quads 2010 & changes that followed? http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports...9b2_story.html
This is a typical N-American article..pity but true..So I undertsand why Plushy is undervaluated in N-A. Plus Evgeni got higher IN and PE marks as Evan..so who was more artistry???? This is a typical mistake in N-A.

the russians's dilemma..
The sensation of the championship of the Russian Figure Skating - Turin Olympic champion Yevgeny Plushenko 2006 lost 18 -year-old Maxim Kovtun and rashly said in Sochi in individual speech, he will not participate . Six weeks before the Olympics and it is unclear to whom put - at half-sick veteran or unstable guy .
Olympics skaters starts on 6 February, when the team will join the fight . This for us is almost guaranteed a medal.
The overall level of figure skating in Russia is high. If Plushenko mistaken somewhere , it will help out partners - Volosozhar and Trankov , for example. That's why Eugene said in the mixed zone , "I will speak only in teams and individually as though Kovtun involved ."
But sorry, Russia at the Olympics will be only one license among men. You have to choose - or put on Kovtun , whose side sports principle ( Russian championship he still won ) , or a veteran, which runs on reputation - against health, a recent operation on his back.
Yes, Plushenko can act in teams , and then "get" injured. Here the replacement and release Kovtun . But as it looks ifs ? Indeed, this combination of poorly disguised . Russia is likely to remain at all without a license in men.
And whether Kovtun wipe all the "gold" ? Sports experts doubt it . Russian Championship was the first tournament of the season, where Maxim done without serious errors . At the Grand Prix "Cup of China" , he dropped out of the blue in the performance of footwork . Looks like a young athlete muscles are not ready for such pressures to perform cascades quads . At the Moscow Grand Prix event he failed any program . In the Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka nachudil in short ...
Simply put, shines Kovtun at best fifth place. And the public wants to see it at the Olympics Plushenko. It's almost the main intrigue of Sochi on a par with those who win in the finals of the hockey tournament.
Yes , we need Evgeni Plushenko - though the carcass , even a scarecrow . If the risk is so athletes who want to see the fans. Of course, it can turn a big failure. But if we put on Kovtun and he will gray , left without medals in team and individual performance - it is generally mediocre outcome of the Olympics.
Now there is a clash between the two groups . Plushenko on the side - his personal coach Alexei Mishin and CEO of Russian Figure Skating Federation Valentin Piseyev . For Kovtun - his consultant, authoritative Tatiana Tarasova .
If Plushenko wants to get to the Olympics through the front door , he had to go to Budapest, where progressive beat Kovtun and receive deserved license along with the chance to become a two-time Olympic champion (if you get lucky in teams ) .
But the risk is great . If Plushenko loses, it will be difficult to find arguments to send it in Sochi. Not be simpler to intensify secret struggle to include all its authority to get through federation to become the number one skater ? Yes , who lost , but be sure to take its course at the Olympics .
The saddest thing that the choice of Russia's small. Plushenko - a veteran who is preparing to perform a swan song . Kovtun - still fledgling , all of whom say that it will only be in the Olympics in 2018 . Generational change came exactly at Sochi.
When we make NUMBER
Evgeni Plushenko was not included in the national team , which in two weeks will go to the European Championships in Budapest . Such a decision by the executive board of Federation of figure skating , although coaching advice FFKKR advocated Plushenko. Athlete coach Alexei Mishin said that Eugene will prepare for the Olympics under the supervision of a team of consultants . Or maybe it would be better to go?
Whitebamboo( poster on Plu's website) wrote a summary what happened on RN:
Yes, Plushenko did make the statement that he would compete only in the team event at Sochi after the LP at Russian Nationals. However, it was in an interview immediately after his LP, and in direct response to a question that asked him, point-blank, to choose between the team and individual events. He replied that he chose the team event. A rather strange question to ask at that point, isnt' it? Then in the press conference, he said the same thing again.
Russian fans, as well as Tatjana Flade, found out after talking to Plushenko afterward that he had the incorrect notion of the rules at the time. He thought--wrongly--that the rule modification that the Russian Skating Fed. obtained said that now it could put up one male singles skater for the team event, and another one for the individual event, without any issue of the first skater withdrawing due to injury.
In other words, he essential thought that Russia had two different spots for men at that point. I don't know who told him that, and what else they said to him, but I have an idea.
After he found out the truth (Tatjana Flade wrote that he was surprised when she explained the true state of the rules for him), Plushenko said in another interview that he was "ready to accept any decision from the Federation, positive or negative". However, if chosen, he would strive to do both the team and individual events. He never mentioned the idea of doing only the team event again after that, but talked about the physical possibility of doing both (again, if chosen).
(BTW, Valentin Piseev, general director of the Russian Skating Fed., reacted to Plushenko's statement immediately by calling it a decision that "expressed patriotic feelings" and one that he supported. Later, Piseev changed his tune and said that what Plushenko said was due to him "not understanding the rules", and being in an emotional state.)

Plushenko needs to skate publicly somewhere to make this more of a dilemma! One person is competing and the other isn't.

From Plushy's statements it sounds like he doesn't believe he is in shape and he wants to train to get there. So a public skating session may not work in his favor. Sadly, the only way he can compete in Sochi is if Kovtun has a meltdown at the Euros and I don't see that happening, with his new found confidence at the nationals, and the weak mens field at the Euros (no Japanese, no Canadians, and no Americans). Kovtun is likely to medal at the Euros, may even win there, which will seal the spot for him. Then he will have a melt down at the Olympics and people will wish that Plushy had competed instead.
(Note- I am a pessimist).

Even if Kovtun skates well at the Games I dont think he would medal unless it were a poorly skated event. That would imply to Plushenko also though. If everyone skates well at the Games it will for certain be a Chan and 2 Japanese podium with inconsistent Fernandez and Ten the only ones who can break that up if they skate spectacularly. A Russian will need help to medal no matter who they send.

Figure skater Evgeni Plushenko plans to perform in 2014 Olympics
Evgeni Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic figure skating champion and twice Olympic silver medalist, told reporters he intended to participate in his fourth Olympics both in the team and individual events.
Although he lost Russia’s championship to Maksim Kovtun, he plans to do his best in the Sochi Olympics. He is not discouraged by the fact that such a prestigious expert as Tatiana Tarasova lobbies Kovtun’s interests.
“It is for President of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia Aleksandr Gorshkov and Federation General Director Valentin Piseyev to decide who will represent Russia in the Sochi Olympics,” Plushenko said.
He said he would refuse from the participation in the two events of the Sochi programme only if he did not feel one-hundred percent ready.
“If I have problems with health I will surely say so,” he noted. “I will appear in the Sochi Olympics only if I feel ready to do my best,” he said.
they missed to mention, that in this case - TAT is not "prestigious expert" - than Kovtun's coach

78% of Russian's plan to follow the #Sochi2014, "Face the Sochi Olympics" - Plushenko 9%, Zaitseva 4%, Ovechkin 3%... http://translate.google.com/translat...-item%2F675421
78% of Russia's plan to follow the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center conducted a study which found that 78% of the population will be watching the Olympics. While 54% of respondents are going to watch the Games on television, 22% would be interested in the news, and 2% going directly to support the team in the stadiums during the competition.
The most popular sports among the population are traditionally Russian subjects: hockey, biathlon, figure skating. It is in these sports team representatives most recognizable: as a "person of the Sochi Olympics" interviewed called E. Plushenko, O. Zaitsev, A. Ovechkin, A. and E. Malkin Shipulina. These are athletes and leaders in the number of personal fans of Russians surveyed: a substantial margin leads E. Plushenko - 9%, then O. Zaitsev - 4%. Option "sick of all for Russia" also scored 4%, slightly less popular among the population SHIPULIN A. and A. Ovechkin (3%).

This thread is an oasis in a desert. Lala, thanks for keeping us updated about Plushenko with all the information- articles, interviews, etc.
What is a 'control skate'? Does this mean Plushenko will perform in front of a committee or will this be a public skate? Any idea how much weight this is given? Clearly there is a struggle between two political groups and it's hard to tell what the decision will be.
I do remember that for the 2006 winter Olympics, Michelle Kwan, who did not participate in the US nationals, had to perform a test skate in front of a committee established by the USFSA. She proved herself to be fit and was sent to Torino. Unfortunately she got injured during the practice, and the alternate (Emily Hughes) was flown in to replace her.

He can't be flag bearer cause of the team event, but that's a nice thought.

Is there a rule against it?- or is it because he needs to be training for the competition rather than for carrying the flag?

The team event starts before the opening ceremony, so many of the skaters who participate in the team are skipping it. There is no rule against it, unless the federation makes one. It's a shame for the skaters who are going to be in their first Olympics and won't get to go.
01-21-2014, 10:18 PM
It sounds silly to start the team event before the Opening ceremonies. In the past they had started a few sports (may be cross country skiing?) before the OC, but I never thought they would do it to a marquee sport like FS.
