Because he's not concerned with Worlds. His focus is on the Olympics. Mishin has stated they aren't concerned if there's only one spot for Russian men. That spot is Plushenko's. He has an excellent chance of winning Europeans again and that will let him make his minimum scores. He'll compete as much as he needs next season to be eligible for the team. Whoever is 2nd at Russian Nationals will be sent to Worlds. It's up to them to earn a 2nd spot for themselves for the Olympic team.

Nationals to Euros is a relatively short time to compete and peak. After Euros, he can do whatever he needs to take care of his body and to think about his programs for the Olympic season.

Also, if he wins Euros, he can limit his GP events to one by having a Top 24 SB, without having to compete at a second and GPF before Sochi. Top 12 at Worlds get two spots each off the top, and Top 6 can't refuse GP without giving up all other competitions and shows during the GP period.

- Golden Spin will be held 13-16 December.
- Istanbul Cup was cancelled this season.
- Instead of Istanbul Cup, 1st Denkova-Staviski cup will be held (13-16 Dec, Sofia) for Sr/Jr/Nv Ladies, Men and Pairs

Plus
- Plushy will tour with Stephane (11-14 Dec, Slovakia and Czech)
- The entry of Golden Spin has closed two weeks ago. Not sure about D-S cup.

I typoed the Golden Spin dates, but didn't realize there was a change to the International schedule (Communication 1727). You left out the "Chicks" category for Denkova-Staviski Cup

I doubt there would be a problem with getting a Federation to extend the deadline, but if both Golden Spin and Denkova-Staviski Cup are being held over the same dates, and they overlap with the tour with Lambiel, it would be a bit rough for him to compete.

Right now, the Men's SP at Golden Spin is listed for 3pm on 14 December, and the FS on 15 December at 1pm. There's no schedule listed for Denkova-Staviski Cup, but perhaps they'd organize it around him, if he could skate the SP, then get on a plane to his tour stop, and then fly to Slovakia or Czech Republic. The shortest flight I could find on Expedia between Sofia and Prague was a 3h45m direct flight.

I think it is the operation similar as he had last year, to "burn out" some nerves on his back so that he will feel less pain. He has to do it every year since the nerves will grow back.

Just a small correction - whoever is 2nd and 3rd at Russian Nationals will join Plushenko at Euros; whoever comes out on top there will go to Worlds. Russia usually uses Euros for selections, not Nationals, which IMO is much more sensible.

I am not 100% sure it is THE surgery he undergoes this time. But I remember some people who studied medicine said this kind of operation has to be done every year if he really wants to block the pain (because the nerves will grow back).

But really I am just guessing here......

What am I going to say it in English? From some of articles, we can assume it can be called a nerve block. Doctors burn his back nerve. His nerve is destroyed temporarily (From several months to 1-2 years. The term is different with each person).

I thought I replied kwanfan1818 yesterday but I couldn't find it Idek it was deleted or I failed posting, anyway, thank you again (sorry if I doubled). I forgot the youngest one

Today I have read a Russian article. His coach was saying about two options. One is, as we talked, participation in a small competition. But neither GS nor D-S. He was talking a local competition Nikolai Panin Memorial. However it will be held from 11 to 14 December. Impossible, too.
So, I think they will pick another option, to hold a private test skating with some specialists.

One medical site said that normally one undergoing this procedure gets about 60 per cent relief and that relief lasts 6-9 months.
