What are those words that you can NEVER spell correctly

There are certain words that I can't spell correctly the first time no matter how hard I try. I still hesitate over "tomorrow". For some reason I always want to do two "m"'s and one "r". And forget about "subpoena" (which I literally just had to check now). I always screw that one up! It must be a mental block of some kind.

What words trip you up?

Religion. For some reason, I always want to put an extra e in there.

Another one is sheriff. My first instinct is to use two r's.

I'm always amused when people spell "definitely" as "defiantly". I was reading one of my favorite blogs and the author was talking about starting a new page, and one of her regular commentators said "oh, I will DEFIANTLY follow that too!"

YES! I do that too. It looks odd without the "e" frankly.

And one more that always trips me up: "vacuum". I always want to spell it "vacume"

"Judgement" is actually also correct, it's just a matter of style preference -- and with the trend toward less is more (and eliminating words altogether in favour of abbreviations), judgment without the extra e tends to be far more popular. Likewise acknowledgment / acknowledgement.

The word that trips me up the most for spelling is "unnecessary" -- how many ns, cs, and ss.

But the word that trips me up the most for typing is strengthen. I seriously can never type that one correctly the first try!

Years ago when I was job hunting with agencies they would give you spelling tests. I don't know about anyone else, but you would look at the list of words and then pretty much convince yourself that they were all spelt wrong because they just didn't look right. Even the ones that were correct.

Hands down (or perhaps in this case, pants down): diarrhea. Followed closely by pneumonia. And it isn't just me -- many years ago I worked in IT for a healthcare company that had a lot of phone reps, and they finally got smart and put all the common misspellings of those words into the system so that it didn't matter.

For me personally: liaison. Got to look it up every single time.

And you're absolutely right on the spelling tests, Aussie Willy -- and their correlation with actual spelling ability is not very good.

From a spellaholic - the way to remember occasion is that it has the same cc's as occur!!

I took shorthand many moons ago and you don't "spell" words, you write symbols for the sounds. ("Susan" uses the symbols for ess-oo-ess-n). Made me almost forget how to spell for awhile. One lesson I always remember on Cs and Ms is recommend, accumulate, accommodate. (I love spelling.)
