Sometimes logic doesn't pan out in research. Rhythmic gymnasts also have lower bone density and they are not known to smoke. Unfortunately, Czisny dislocated her hip as others have reported. She's out of surgery and doing well. The long-term prognosis depends on a number of factors that aren't clear yet, such as whether any nerve damage sustained is temporary or permanent. It's unlikely that this injury is related to the surgery to repair the labral tear, but possible that she has a source of hip instability, either congenital or acquired, that predisposed her to both injuries.

So, the above quote might have been one reason why some presumed that surgery had taken place. I'm not sure the clocks here are synched with real time as this definitely was up there before 3:35 am, which I presume is Eastern US time, but I definitely read it before I went to bed at midnight. At any rate, with the USFS press release today, I am reading it differently than I did last night. Maybe the poster meant that she was out of the doctor's immediate consultation and care, but it did seem to be a very quick (and very much appreciated) response if surgery had happened and she was already out of recovery. I have a feeling it was (fortunately) a lesser level of treatment, especially if she seems to now be returned home, per USFS release.

I'm not sure if her team will step forward and give us anything specific, and it is certainly their right to have her condition remain private. We didn't hear too much with the labral tear, so I'm guessing we will see her when she is further along.

When you first joined FSU, you selected a setting for your time zone. In your case, you must have selected Eastern Time.

I realize that people who live in the Eastern Time Zone think that the whole world runs on Eastern Time, but it doesn't really.

I am not qualified to say anything here, but you guys jumped into some other language, does closed verses open reduction mean reversal of the dislocation with or without surgery.

A closed reduction could still require anesthesia and a similar recovery (stay in the hospital) just from the effects of the anesthesia (compounded with the pain of course relating to the dislocation).

Don't they normally use anesthesia in either case? I'd hate to have a hip reduction without it.

Small club competitions in the U.S. often use majority ordinal judging (6.0, not OBO), plus this is considered "off-season." As I posted above, there were national and international judges on hand to give Czisny feedback on her programs.

Bear in mind, most of the competitors at an event like this are not looking to make a World team. They are working toward smaller goals of their own.

I think the USFS does usually arrange to have some ISU-qualified tech specialists/judges on hand as observers to provide the necessary feedback. For someone like Czisny, one of the benefits of an event like this is the chance to compete her program in front of an audience and judges and to test the pacing of the program. Skaters always say the program feels a little different in competition than in your training rink (most likely the extra nerves/adrenalin). Wasn't it Moskvina who likened the first competition with a new program to the first pancake? It's never as good as the second or third one will be.

I don't think the nature of the event really had anything to do with her injury. It sounds like this was a bad landing/fall that could just as easily have happened in training.

Just reading all this now. Poor Alissa! She had worked so hard to come back, and now this. Best wishes to her for a speedy and thorough recovery!

Actually, while this is very disappointing for her for this season, she likely didn't do any significant nerve damage and hopefully will make a full recovery in a relatively short time. The fact they were able to reduce the dislocation very quickly is very hopeful toward her long term recovery as an athlete. She should recover from the injury just fine and hopefully continue her skating career if that is her wish.

From reading the update, sounds like she was sedated and had a closed reduction. Speedy recovery to Alissa!

"They did a CAT scan in Appleton, which didn't show anything major," Dungjen said. "Right now, she is doing as well as can be expected. Obviously, she is going to be sore. Best case, some normal physical therapy will strengthen the hip."

Great! Really looking for silver lining here.

The (obvious) reason she skated in Appleton:

"She has been skating her short for about two months and has been doing full run-throughs of her free for about a month and a half," Dungjen said. "We didn't want U.S. nationals to be her first event back. She needed to get out there and shake the cobwebs out, and the Appleton event was available."

While a full return to competitive skating would be icing on the cake and certainly seems possible given the tone of Jason's statement, here's wishing Alissa a full, measured recovery and a clean bill of health, first and foremost.

Out of Europeans. It's her achilles, if I recall correctly. Some are thinking she might call it career. I love Korpi's and Lepisto's competitive skating so much, I'm bummed.

I am sad for Alissa, but - what is this? Why should anyone think that Korpi might end her competitive career because of this? Her Achilles tendon is inflamed, not torn. Surgery is not needed for that, and I believe that with the right treatment Korpi could be ready for Worlds. Of course, she has to be careful, as this seems to be her weak spot. It's better not to overdo, putting too much stress on the tendon.

Anyway, Korpi was at the Finnish Sport's Gala two days ago, and there was a video interview with her and Stephane Lambiel (he was there to promote the 'Art on Ice' show which will be in Helsinki for the first time this February). The interviewer asked Stephane to wish something to Kiira for Sochi, and nothing indicated that she doesn't intend to compete there.
