What is carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas. Several household sources, such as gasoline-powered tools and generators, produce carbon monoxide. Anything that burns can produce carbon monoxide. The fumes are extremely hazardous and can cause sudden illness or death.
Why is carbon monoxide so dangerous?
Carbon monoxide weakens the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to organs and body tissues. The gas cannot be seen or smelled, so people often don’t know they are breathing it. Poisoning can occur in minutes.
Why is carbon monoxide poisoning a potential problem during a disaster situation?
During disasters, people who lose electricity often turn to fuel-powered devices to cool or heat their homes or cook their food. Gas-powered generators may be used during emergencies but need to be used safely in an outdoor setting. Carbon monoxide fumes from generators can build up in enclosed areas and poison people.
I'm in Brooklyn and this wind is getting really scary.
Wind started kicking up here on the other side of New York Bay, too.

keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers...
Oscar's really antsy too. I don't know if it's the noise or the very low pressure but he just jumped straight in the air, all four paws off the ground, for no reason we could see.
There's pieces of ice in that rain out there. And the tree I love right outside my balcony is taking such a beating...and the worst isn't even here yet.

Here in Fair Lawn, New Jersey (15 miles from GW Bridge), wind gusts are really strong, the sky is filled with leaves, sounds like a train going by and a deer just ran through the backyard.
OUR GENERATOR IS OUTSIDE, WE HAVE USED IT MANY TIMES BEFORE, SO WE ARE GOOD TO GO WITH SAFETY. Besides, bless PECO, the power was restored after about 5 hours, we are so so so lucky. DH couldn't find any new gas cans to purchase. Then I remembered that my son has a lawn motor container and since they don't have a generator, we borrowed it since he won't be mowing this week. My daughter and I were total spazzes and could barely open the gas container, so a nice man offered to help, and then we splashed gas everywhere, and another helped us clean it up, but car still smells. DH will siphon gas by mouth out of the cars if necessary, as all hardwares were also sold out of siphon kits which would have had a pump.
The family in DC did take off, called from Maryland, so they made it through Delaware, not home yet.
For those of you in apartment buildings I would make sure once the winds really pick up you use your curtains in case of flying stuff outside.. you could also tape them?? Might also want to remove anything from your balconies.. or porches etc.,

On the Weather Channel yesterday, they said it was already snowing in southwestern Virginia.
The garden kitty is napping peacefully on the couch. Thankfully I'm not counting on him for weather alerts.

It's starting to get windy here in Nova Scotia and we are not even going to be hit by this storm! There is a cruise ship still here in port (they usually are gone by 3) so I wonder if they are sticking it out here for a while?
