Figure Skating on TV in the USA (2012-13 Season)

I liked Mike Emrick - quite a lot. He didn't talk too much. He was silent during the actual skating. He gave the information crisply and threw it to Sandra and Scott - who talked too much for my taste. He didn't pretend a knowledge of skating he didn't have. He didn't ask stupid and condescending questions. He didn't try to be provacative (a la Tom Hammond). He didn't pretend to love the sport - at the same time he was showed respect. He did include 2 quick and forgivable (fun) references to hockey. All in all I thought he did a good, professional job.

Glad to hear Mike did a good job - haven't gotten around to watching the full broadcast yet that I recorded on Sunday but now I will look forward to it with more enthusiasm.

Also happy to see that NBC will be airing most of the Grand Prix in some form. It was really nice to see skating on a big screen for a change.

Mike "Doc" Emrick was already one of my favorite sports announcers of all-time because of his hockey work. His impressive performance at Skate America didn't surprise me at all. He's just a really nice person who works well with other people. Even when I was growing up a die-hard New York Rangers fan and Emrick was announcing games for the hated Philadelphia Flyers, I still liked him. Great knowledge. Quirky and fun sense of humor. Unselfish. I wish there were more "Doc" Emricks in sports announcing - and in hard-news journalism, as well.

Thanks to a tip from the SkateFans list, I've found six NHK Trophy broadcasts on TVJPN, a Japanese-language channel that's available to some Dish Network and cable TV subscribers at the moment. This is an extra-charge channel running a free trial scheduled to end on November 15. That's 7-10 days too early for us, but you never know -- some providers may forget to turn off the free trial! Before reading this post, I ordered TV Japan earlier today, like I have done for the past several years. I would imagine the Thursday broadcast will be ladies short. TV Japan pretty much ignores pairs and dance entirely--they may show the gold medalists' gala performances if they're generous. Also, the news shows often show reports and interviews of the Japanese skaters.

That special did NOT have Shawn Sawyer or Jeff Buttle!!! The Comcast guide said it did!!! I didn't recognize any of these skaters, except for the hosts, Nancy Kerrigan and Michael Weiss.

That sounds more like Kaleidoscope on Ice except you would have at least known some of the skaters there so I guess that wasn't it either. Checked my listing for the next 2 weeks and HFOI doesn't show up yet.
