Skating to Jazz

Regardless of how skaters choose to perform to it, to me jazz music has certain elements that separate it from pop or any other genre - elements such as syncopation, swing (whether hard or soft), improvisation, etc. The music of that Dom/Shabs program didn't (to my ear) have any of the above. To me it sounded more like popular musical theater or a film score.

Shostakovich's Waltz 2 for Jazz Suite is very clearly and definitely waltz. I've no idea why it has the word "jazz" in the title, but calling it jazz makes me LOL. Perhaps a joke on Shostakovich's part?

There are tons of skaters who use more or less real jazz music, but few can truly express the essence and spirit of jazz.

Does this Irving Berlin song qualify as jazz? It was originally written for Judy Garland in Easter Parade, but the number was cut because it was considered too risque. Here Katarina Witt does it justice.

This music is considered jazz? Seriously? I listen to a lot of jazz, all periods and genres, and this doesn't sound even remotely like any kind of jazz I've ever heard.

It would be considered classical, definitely, but Shostakovich was inspired heavily by jazz in his creation of the suite.

I just have to say I really like this guy’s music choices. Other than above mentioned he used some classic rock, rock folk, blues, (Simon & Garfunkel, Bee Gees, Nick Drake, John Mayer, Blues Brothers), some guitar (Guitar Concerto and Jimi Hendrix), great soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi.
