    Skating to Jazz

While impatiently waiting for the videos of Stéphane Lambiel's new program to "Puttin' on the Ritz" I recalled and watched some other programs to jazz music I liked.

I love "light" jazz as a music and I love when it is performed on the ice. Not every skater does it justice though. You need to have good skating and dancing skills for this, to be able to feel the music and catch the rhythm which with jazz is not an easy task at all.

Do you have any jazzy performances and programs that you like? Please, share.

    Some performances that I like:

    Stéphane Lambiel
    Tainted love
    Let the good times roll
    Don't stop the music

    Yuna Kim
    All of me

    "Take five" was popular recently:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnpRKk1fdu0 - Takahiko Kozuka, SP

Lu Chen 1997 Worlds SP. She missed her elements and didn't make the freeskate final, but I thought her presentation was beautiful.

I cannot post yt links since I am at work, but I wanted to mention these programs skated to Jazz:

Puttin' on the Ritz (Jenny Kirk- she was pretty good in this)

Take Five- Shishkova & Naumov (92 Oly SP), Torville Dean (pro)

Got the blues for you (not sure if this is Jazz, though): Krylova-Ovssianikov (exhibition around 98/99 or could be 97).

I have no idea what the music is, but I've always loved Wilson & McCall's 1984 freedance, here performed at the Sarajevo Olympics. Ignore Peggy Fleming's comments, she is an idiot.

Thank you for posting this one
The music is "Staccato's Theme" by Elmer Bernstein and it's very nice FD.As for the comments , maybe Peggy was little bit too harsh but i guess it applies to most of the commentators once in a while.Tracy herself sometimes is not the brightest and fair cockie in the jar either but i still like her comments.

    Brian Boitano 1986 Worlds LP

    Brian Orser 1988 Olympics SP

Kurt Browning 1994 World Team Figure Skating Champs TP

and countless skaters have performed to In the Mood.

ETA: Thank you vivika, I've always wanted to know the title of their jazz music.

Wilson and McCall also performed a FABULOUS freedance to Billion Dollar Baby at 1989 World Pros but I can't find it on youtube.

    Tomas Verner 2007 NHK Trophy
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCpT...eature=related

I've always loved Tomas and felt he should have medaled on the World stage (he came close a few times). I think Tomas is a wonderfully expressive (and sexy) skater. His countryman, Brezina, has a sexy voice and great jumping ability, but none of the expressiveness that Tomas possesses. Will be interesting to see if Brezina's new coaching situation helps improve his presentation skills.

Gary Beacom -- I'm Your Man Love it! Love him!

Cousins' Satan Takes a Holiday (posted earlier) is one of my absolute favorite skating performances!

Thanks for this thread (I'd forgotten about some of the performances posted).

This music is considered jazz? Seriously? I listen to a lot of jazz, all periods and genres, and this doesn't sound even remotely like any kind of jazz I've ever heard.

Jeremy Abbott 2009 Worlds SP to Santana Not his best performance (this was back when he was often popping his 3A) but the footwork and spins and in-betweens (choreo by Kurt Browning) are just first class. (and he really needed a haircut!! )
Jeremy Abbott 2012 US Nats Swing SP
Takahiko Kozuka 08-09 SP to Take Five (choreographed by Yuka Sato)
Jeff Buttle 2006 Olympics SP "Sing Sing Sing"
    BARK LESS. WAG MORE.

I'm still not convinced. Maybe the piece as originally written and orchestrated qualifies, but this arrangement sounds more like Linichuk saying "I like this music, and it has the word 'jazz' in the title, so we can call it a jazz dance."

    Yannick Ponsero 2009 free skate

To some skaters, jazz music is a chance to slouch and not point their toes and straighten their arms and legs. To others, jazz music is a medium to express a kind of freedom unlike any other genre.
