Ostapchuk hadn't competed outside of Belarus pretty much all season which is always a major red flag. Can't believe the stupid bint got caught though!

Off to update the proper medals table.

The International Olympic Committee said Monday that Ostapchuk tested positive for the steroid metenolone. She won the shot put exactly a week earlier.

The IOC says she was tested the day before her competition and again following the event. Both samples were positive.

I feel for the New Zealand athlete being deprived of her moment in the stadium and on the podium. It is interesting that the athletes - or some at least - seemed to know this prior to the offence - how on earth did she think she would get away with it? So what happend if the athlete refuses to return the medal et al though I would assume it is the Belarus federation's interest that they do return it.

I wonder how many more will be caught in the near and distant future

It was a matter of time but I didn´t expect it would take so much days, it was very suspicious that suddenly she started throwing that far away and in the competition she cleared 21 meters all the time, she was obviously on something.

Stupid Ostapchuk, what a way to end her career and yes, deprived the posibility of Valerie Adams to stand in the podium and enjoy the celebration as she should have

Congrats to New Zealand, great athlete and twice legit olympic champion

I wonder if WADA are finally on top of their game instead of one step behind the dopers, so that it won't be worth the risk anymore!

Yes indeed. Hopefully they are on top of the cheaters.

It's difficult, because methods both of doping, and of covering up doping, change, with the goal of being less detectable. It's not always easy or quick (or possible with today's technology) to develop tests that pick up everything.

Is it possible, I wonder, to test athletes as they check into the Games?

i came back to the olympics folder in search of after-glow but found this...

are we now entering that dreadful period when the only likely news is doping tests coming forth to nullify previous results? is there usually a flurry of such results in the first month after olympics concluded? there's probably no hard and fast rule, different analyses taking different time spans and all, but what's the usual timeline--can seasoned olympics watcher comment? thanks

it's unfortunate that the true winner wasn't able to celebrate and be celebrated in the actual moment.

Even if they do, lots of cheaters won't get caught. Certain cyclists who got caught fairly recently have said they must have been tested while they were doped at least 100 times, and got caught once. Plus I still don't think they have a test for homologous blood doping except for inferences drawn from blood passports and most federations don't spend the time and money necessary to establish an effective blood passport program.

They'd then also still need to check before and after their events. Some types of doping aren't done until close to the event itself.
