That's what they said back in the 1980s about holding the summer games. it represents a poverty of ambition. You can do anything if you try. In fact, holding a winter games in the UK would leave just as much of a legacy as the London games as it would change the whole cultural attitude towards winter sports in this country.

The winters are really winters and the mountains get lots of snow - even in bad winters.

Good points. In terms of the slopes, they are no different to those of Harbin in China which held the 3rd Asian Winter Games in 1996 and which has bid for the winter Olympics. As you say, Vancouver suffered from a lack of snow and that can always be made up for by artificial snow.

I am remember my friend put a facebook post of temperature comparison between Edinburgh Summer (18 degree Celsius ) and Sydney winter high (19 degree Celsius) for comparison. I do think parts of Scotland can get cold (really cold) , the question is whether anyone lives there. It could be really middle of nowhere (not in the sense Cameroon meant while describing SLC). I hope the expense of the games wasn't too much and hope the after effects of the games are just as much nice as the games have been. Go London (real), voidiest city in the world, a city i called home for three years.

    Who said?

Besides the fact the UK did bid for several games in the 1980s-1990s with Birmingham and Manchester. When they put London forward, it won.

It was the Birmingham and Manchester bids that reversed the negative attitudes and laid the groundwork for London

Gold Lithuania, silver GB and bronze to Brazil. GB athletes have medalled at every women's modern pentathlon since it was introduced in 2000.

Natalia Coyle from Ireland finishes 9th!

USA push China aside to restore medal dominance

China inflicted an early psychological blow at the top of the medals table with teenage swimmer Ye Shiwen's stunning double gold, but the Aquatics Centre has ultimately proved a key venue as the United States have bitten back to dominate the Olympics.

Four years ago in Beijing, the Americans, who had previously come first in each Olympics since they boycotted the 1980 Games, were stung when they were knocked off the top of the overall podium by the Chinese.

But despite China winning more gold medals than they have ever managed before on foreign soil, London has seen the United States emphatically restore the established order.
    USA, USA, USA.

Congrats to London on a well organized and fun Olympic Games! I hate to see it end, but it will help me get more work done this week

Gary Lineker asked Michael Johnson how the Games have been received outside Britain and Johnson replies, "How would I know? I've been here!"

Gary Lineker is useless as a presenter. Hope the BBC don't have him anywhere near Rio.
