Poths completely agree. I'm fine with Musty as AA champ just because Iordache's bars are SO pants. It was quite exciting though to watch Iordache seemingly dominate only to have Musty's bars swing the whole thing on its head. Womens VT was awful and bars just a tad predictable. Musty only needed to phone it in but she did her job. I'm sure she'll be upgrading on bars for Worlds. I'm predicting Iordache to take BB and FX which will make her top medallist for the championships.

This championships has been one of those rare occasions when I actually preferred watching the men's events to the women's. And while GB WAG goes down the swanny, I can console myself that GB MAG is alive and well. Congrats to Max Whitlock on his AA silver, PH bronze and floor gold, and I'm thrilled for Dan Keating who was ROBBED of a place on the Olympic team but has overcome injuries and bitter disappointment to take PH gold beating Berki

I'm devastated for Gabby Jupp who I think has (I'm hoping that's still present tense) so much potential, but you can't blame her injury on too much too fast like an Ohashi or something. Double pike is standard beam dismount. If anything she's just dreadfully unlucky

    Gymnastics News No.12 Part Deux!

I'm not being arrogant! I'm not saying that the US is better, which is your assumption. Two gymnasts with two falls place in 3rd and 4th. We used to freak when someone won a medal with 1 fall! Now it's suddenly ok to do it with 2?! Finals were much better, anyway.

The argument about how Europe and China don't compete full difficulty early in the quad is just laughable anyway. So they had those results with EASIER DIFFICULTY!? Now that's embarrassing.

Didn't watch the meet, but I'm glad that Mustafina can now call herself an individual European Champion. I was afraid it would never happen, especially after the horror that happened two years ago...

Say what you will about the talk of her work ethic and attitude but I frankly wish more of Russia's gymnasts had her competitive mettle.

What chinese and Europeans do is to experiment with their routine early in the season like Mustafina's beam routine, they are tweaking the routine all throughout the year... They are also working with small core group of athletes and they don't have the luxury like americans to go out all out... Americans are working with a large number of gymnasts, hence few broken gymnast is not a problem for them...

And before you say anything more dramatic, let me tell you that AA finals was a class event with all top 5 registering no falls...

Edited to answer my own question. David Belyavsky won the men's AA title while Max Whitlock got silver and Oleg Vernyayev of Ukraine got bronze. Happy for all three medalists.

Europe consists of many countries all with vastly different economical backgrounds, support systems, facilities and quality/access of coaching. To lump the performances of these vastly different nations into one Continental representation is moronic. Sweden for example have absolutely thrived here, Switzerland have found a couple of new stars and Spain are once more on the rise. You referred to the performances here as indicative of the Continent as a whole and with that, miss the obvious details.

I'm starting to think the American tendency to push their gymnasts to extreme before they've even developed is more likely a result of the fact that the coaches are from different nations, who have moved for economical reasons and therefore need their athletes to make the team for exposure and financial benefits. Whilst I agree that they have a deep pool to choose from, they continuously turn up at a championship with young girls who have literally broken down in the interim between selection and championships. 2008, Sam and Memmel were in pieces. Memmel performed on one limb 2011, they lost their captain the night before the QF, 2012 they had a gymnast with a broken toe,Wieber with a tear and two injured alternates. I'm not complaining, Id rather see three Amanars that could potentially end a gals career, as opposed to a full twisting layout. But then, I am the kind of person who watched Bross destroy her knee and was more concerned that her injury would scare the shit out of other competitors.

At the end of the day US gym program is the bastard child of Russia/Romania/China. Plough in some cash, remove any great concern for their athlete's well being and you have a pretty great system. One day, they may even include some artistry.

Imagine if Ukraine had 1/10th of the resources of the USA?

    Livchikova for Rio AA!

Actually, why don;t the USA just buy Livchikova?!

Apologies that you had to read such a typo riddled rant that made little sense. Still, I suspect you're used to me by now.
Completely agree with YOUR comments Flo. Also, what did you make of the Matt Baker/GB gymnast love shack yesterday? Hannah was so quiet, Thomas was so common and Smith, well he came across as articulate in that company which was hilarious. I think I actually enjoyed it. Any word on what happened to Lord God Mitch Fenner. Sorely missed!

    double arabian - step back
    1 1/2 through to a 2 1/2 - stuck
    Memmel - little off
switch ring - strug - off balance
Oh how I have missed Ukraine's line and body awareness

    Anastasia Grishina - RUS

tucked full in - hop back
    double turn L - good
    Unfortunate hair
whip - triple - frog leap landing but beautiful in the air
    quad turn - beautiful
    2 1/2 - small shuffle
switch leap - ring leap (really doesnt take advantage of difficulty in the leaps)
double pike - very nice, best one she's ever done

Could medal, one of my favorite routines to watch I just wish she could compete like Mustafina. 14.233
