I am not the biggest fan of Aly's gymnastics, but for the first time since 2000 I felt like the women's gold medalist on FX at least push some boundaries. That first pass is incredible, and so are the 2nd and 3rd passes. She may have not-the-best form, and the choreographer still needs to be taken out back for that routine (especially the awkward part where she straddles the floor and does that weird shoulder shake), but that is one deserving floor champ right there.

Deng Linlin is Olympic Champion on beam She's been the best Chinese beam worker all quad IMO, I just love her acrobatic elements. I've considered her the dark horse the past two years here but wow unexpected great job! She's also the first Chinese gymnast to win two golds in two different Olympics. Always the overlooked one, in Beijing, even when she was World BB champion, look at her now!

And I have to hand it to the top 3 on floor - those were probably the 3 best routines any of them have ever done (maybe Mustafina 2010 worlds better). If you blink at just the right time, Aliya's triple twist shouldn't be a .5 deduction and then you just remember her gorgeous carriage and attention to detail.

Ponors music sounds like it was played on a church organ. It was clean but it's like music a level 7 would have at a state meet, she should've used the original. Cleanest set she's had though, but really that triple was the second most offensive pass behind Aliyas of this final.

Aly I think that's the best she's ever done, I knew this would be hers after the 1st pass because you've just never seen her nail one like that. Her parents will probably make another appearance tonight.

Izbasa. I think that the gym gods decided to sacrifice Maroney here so Izbasa could keep their OGM since 1976 streak going (that's incredible), so that's why that happened. she was beautiful otherwise, easily my favorite routine tonight even with her Rebecca Bross moment.

But yeah - Raisman, Ponor, Mustafina

Just lovely.

There is much more diversity on the men's side.

The whole specialist thing has actually worked out well for them.

Well a part of me thinks some of it is the judging.. Its clear Mustafina and Paseka BOTH were giving the benefit of the doubt over Ferrari and Bieger...I've heard many mention that Raisman's scores on UB would drop significantly if she was wearing a different LEO too. It sucks..

I'm OK with the tie break rule on event finals, it's just one apparatus.

But things like all around and team should have the tie break rules better sorted out and publicised. It seems shady, even when the rule is properly applied.
And I'm not in favor of ties.

The Mustafina-Ferrari tie break today was not execution. It was that fugly leotard that Ferrari was wearing and her complete lack of proper (meaning none) use of music.

Raisman is the rightful winner. But I thought Ponor should have scored better.
Now can we please get Aly to improve her feet and overal line?

Afanasyeva is the quuen of floor, with her poise and movement. Just not her day (and the lower difficulty probably didn't help).

Please get Wieber a new coach. Someone that will give her a proper floor routine, with decent music and choreo, because, unlike Ferrari, she can follow the music pretty well.

I haven't watched any of the other finals today, but can people get Gabby a break??
She was fecking perfect for 3 all-around outings in a row, that got her 2 gold medals. She's a rockstar.

Congrats to Aly!!! She has worked so hard and has been such a great leader for this U.S. squad. Also, congrats to Aliya for making a solid comeback from injury to medal in several events. Hope to see her continue to improve! And a word of advice to the Russian coaches: please invest in a good sport psychologist for Komova. Or find something that will motivate her. She's just too good to be giving those tenths away like she did. And to those in the press who felt it was necessary to criticize Gabby's hair and AA leo color choices, good job distracting a 16 yr old girl. Gabby still has much to be proud of though. It's definitely been an interesting event this time around.

They need to have a camp where all they do is choreograph routines. Gage always seems to have decent floor routines. Ditto AGOC. Some of these fx's have been .

That floor routine has actually kind of grown on me, even the shoulder shake. Someone pointed out in one of the earlier threads that there has actually been some thought put into the routine, even if Aly isn't the most spectacular performer and I agree.

Now, just don't watch Aly's routine back to back with Podkopayeva's Hava Nagila from 94. It also has its moments of awkward choreography, but Lilia could make anything look good.

Why should USA.. Its not like Russia gets appropriate credit for having beautiful choregraphy and dance vs USA. See Komova's floor routine vs Douglas's in the All Around... Only 1 tenth execution score higher. Don't get me wrong Komova's vault score was way too high but still.

At least Ponor and Musty are good performers and have some artistic presence.

Wieber is the only one in that final with actual good form.

I didn't think it was possible for anyone to be even more obsessive-compulsive with their negative gymnastics reactions than bek, but you're starting to give her a run for the money.

Congratulations to Raisman for sticking it to all the haterz and grabbing a well-deserved gold by being, you know, an actual women's athlete rather than an inconsistent "ar-teeste"!

I understand why you quoted the first two, but the 3rd one has nothing to do with the others.

In that 3rd one I was even knocking the 'artists' for their form. I don't see what's so wrong about pointing out that only Wieber is non-offensive in that area.
