Onward we go, starting with diving as always these days.

I think it would be nice to still try to stay spoiler free in this specific thread but obviously I'm not in charge.

Diving fans are lucky that NBC doesn't cover that sport like they do gymnastics. Imagine showing a round, then switching sports, coming back for round two, switching sports again and making you wait until the last segment four hours later to find out the winners.

I really don't get diving scoring. I know that there is a difficulty for the dives (after the compulsories) and I know there is an execution score which appears to be out of 10. I know that some of the execution scores get dropped. And I know that, in some way, those things make a total. But that's where I get lost.

The first 3 scores are individual execution scores for the first diver, the 2nd 3 scores are individual execution scores for the second diver. The high and low for each of those sets of 3 scores is thrown out. The remaining 5 judges judge only synchronization, the high and low of those are thrown out. Those scores not thrown out are added up and then multiplied by the degree of difficulty. They then take a certain percentage of that number (I believe 60%) to make the dive total.

I think they drop the high and low score, then use some multiplier to combine the scores. Or something. Somebody actually explained it in an earlier thread.

The US dive program must be ecstatic so far this week. If they win some individual medals as well, they'll be the biggest success story of the entire US team, given how long it's been since there were any medals at all. One of our students had a dive scholarship at the University, but they weren't nearly good enough for the Os.

LMAO, they explained the scoring back in Sydney and it happened to be one of the nights I had on tape, so after multiple viewings, was able to finally remember how it all worked

Yes. But since I went to an open concept school way back when, I have powers to ignore just about anything. (It finally crept into my brain at the end, so I missed most of it)
