Booo only just noticed that the only Palestinian athlete who qualified to the games (and didn't get a wildcard) lost his first Judo match.

The badminton format is ridiculous so their fed is to blame. Totally weird group stages with two out of three teams advancing etc. Just cut the number of participants in half and start with a proper knock-out round.

Hopefully that's the change they will make before the next games.

If you simply have knockout rounds, you can't manipulate the result like this.

Still, they should just disqualify the teams who "played" like this, it's ridiculous.

This is the first time they have had this group format at the Olympics and the Badminton Association was warned months ago this situation could happen. When the Chinese lost to the Danes yesterday morning the PTB were warned again this could happen in the later matches and sure enough it did!!

IMHO all 4 teams should be disqualified and the teams who lost in their groups advanced instead.

Although I guess the problem is how do you prove somebody is deliberately trying to lose? We might all see that but from a legal point, it might be problematic.

I absolutely don't think the badminton players should be disqualified! the players should not be the ones to blame for thinking strategically and trying to conserve energy. I think this is a case where the Badminton association messed up the format... And is now trying to save face by blaming it's own players. I don't find it all too different from swimmers not putting their best effort in the heats or semis to save energy. Would we have the same reaction in gymnastics if hypothetically a team deliberately tried to place third or fourth in the prelims so they could end on vault and judge what vaults to perform?

Did you watch the match? They played like people who'd never played badminton before. The swimming equivalent would be if the competitors flailed helplessly for 20m and then just plain gave up by the time they got to the other end. The swimmers who save energy still can't completely fail at their sport - they'd still have to get top 8 or whatever.

At least they could've ACTED like they were trying.
