I want Gabby and Aly to medal because I am American and I can't help it! It is perfectly natural to feel this way.
I want Iordache to win because she is just so darn cute and now that I am getting older I am starting to become defenseless against cute children.
I want Musty to win something because I like her attack.
And re: above skating commentator discussion. Scott Hamilton would love Aly. He would be Scottgasming all over the place on her tumbling runs.
I know very little about gymnastics (and much of what I've learned I've learned from these threads the past couple of days ) but is Jordyn Wieber considered elegant?
I wouldn't call her that. She has better form and lines than Aly but I would describe her more as powerful than elegant personally.
She's not elegant in my book, but she is dynamic and powerful. She is cleaner than Raisman and performs reasonably well on floor IMO.
Between Gabby, Aly, and Jordyn, I feel like Aly has actually done the most work to get an AA medal, even if they are better gymnasts than she is (although she's closed the gap with Jordyn a lot). If you look at all of them between last year's worlds and now, she's the one who has made the most upgrades and done the most work to eliminate her weaknesses, especially if you count the degree to which she's cleaned up her form. That's one of the hardest things to do in a sport like gymnastics or skating, to go back and work on something that you suck at in the hopes of making it better, instead of chasing the shiny exciting new thing. Especially if it's something where you'll never really be excellent or even good, just "more acceptable", that takes a huge amount of emotional strength. Aly never going to be a Komova, but just the improvement on her bars from trials to qualifying deserves a lot of props. Especially if you think about her bars meltdown at worlds...
I don't even think Jordyn goes for "elegant", definitely clean, but not "elegant".
^You're probably right. I'm sure she knows and plays to her strengths in this regard. It'd be hard for any gymnast with her build to emulate Komova, and nor should she need to.
I feel badly for Jordyn but now I also FEEL for Jordyn. Do you know what I mean? She was always a solid gymnast, a hard worker and a champion but I felt like she internalized so much that she seemed distant. Last night she couldn't hold back and I wanted to give her a big hug. She's still a teenager after all. It is hard to see some of your dreams dashed on a world stage at any age.
I wonder if the Russian team will rely on Grishina as much as in qualifying. She often had quite a late spot (for instance on floor) and she was prone to make mistakes. Did she even make one apparatus without major mistakes?
I personally wouldn't use her on floor in team finals but Mustafina not only because Musty had a higher score in qualification but also because Grishina seems mentally as untough as one can be.
And I still struggle to find her gymnastics as mesmerizing as many people in here do. Maybe because she always messes up when I watch her.
Hitler Mule-her has done basically the same thing. It creates a bit of backlash sentiment.

I'm the same, but kind of in the opposite direction. On the gym boards I post on, there is SO much American hyperbole that it is easy to cheer against them.
However, as in skating (and tennis) I make myself not be too influenced by fanbases, especially when they aren't seemingly reflective of the athletes in anyway.
Therefore I greatly appreciate what the American gymnasts put out, even if they aren't always my favourites
Jordyn's gymnastics actually remind me a lot of the better/more "elegant" MAG guys. Not that she's mannish, but that at her best she seems to be going for a purity of form and a lot of control and economy to her power. At her best, her gymnastics actually reminds me a lot of Orozco. I never get that impression of effortless power under deliberate control from, say, Aly. Even when she's really confident, like on beam or that first floor pass, she's like Alicia, she's so aggressive that you get the impression it's overcompensating. Jordyn's regressed a lot on beam, but at her best, she was really confident in a way that didn't seem brash and solid without being heavy.
Has anyone looked at the nationalities of the Floor Ex judges? I speculate that they are Russian! They overscored Aly and underscored Wieber, so as to keep Wieber out of the AA finals, and thus give a boost to the Komova and Musty.
*irony on* yes of course all the judges on floor were Russian and
clever enough to crunch the numbers at the same time as judging and developing a conspiracy that they communicated to each other by pure thought. *irony off*
