Your explanation, AYS, was full of insight, wise words of a participating parent.

I could also see where a teenager just all of a sudden clicks, and gets their competitive gear in full drive. I guess it might be hard to believe after hours, no years, of training, but as a small point I remember when one of my kids clicked about kicking the soccer ball to where the teammate was running, rather than to where she was because that would end up being to where she had been if all were running forward and many kids kick the ball behind their intended target.

So do swimmers and track or any athletes improve their mental game as they go along, I think so.

However, having said all that, with the Chinese swimmer in question, what astounded me (and again I could be naive here) is that I thought she was humming along just exactly at more or less the same speed as the others and then she exploded in the final lap, where all other girls were running out of steam on the last lap, she created power out of nowhere, do swimmers really have the ability to find 5th gear? That last lap was suspicious to me.

I just read in the comments section in a Globe and Mail article on the 1500m that the Chinese coach has admitted to giving Sun a chemical substance called " bi-hydrogen oxide" to boost his strength. Is there any link anywhere in the Chinese media that quotes this? Is this legal as far as the IOC is concerned?

Makes you wonder if a lot of Chinese endurance athletes are taking the same thing.

For ex, I saw that a Chinese guy blew away the field in race walking.

Yes, I did mean Ryan Cochrane and WAHOOO!!!

W/all of the talk of this being Michael Phelps' last race, it's also the last race for Canada's Brent Hayden and two others of our Relay Team.

Go out there and have an awesome swim to finish things out Guys!!

I already teared up when the commentator mentioned it being the "last swim" for a bunch of guys in this race.

Amazing pullaway by Nathan Adrian! Sure seems a fitting way to close out the swimming at these Olympics, with two American relay victories.

OMG what happened to Australia!! Well done Japan and ofcourse USA.
    Nathan Adrian kicked butt!!!!

MP finished with a gold. How fitting. 18 golds, 22medals. He doubles the next rank.

To bad GB... it was close!4th position.

Good bye Ian Thorpe, such a pleasure, a great commentator.

WHAT a swim for Nathan Adrian! Phelps got the US the lead back and then Adrian just blew the field back.

Don't you find it worrying that doctors call treating you their "practice" ?

Wow, such a great Olympics for swimming. Such a great career for Michael - and also great comeback for Brendan Hansen. Some may be sick of the swimming coverage, but I'm always sad to see it end.

    Gonna miss seeing Michael swim.

These ladies during the relay medal ceremony all seem really heartfelt in their congratulations of each other.
