    By the way - I heard a report that you can bring your own food inside the Olympic venues. Is that true? If so - cool.

    Well apparently they decide to shorten it by half an hour so people can get home by midnight! (More like they can't negotiate the contract with the transport for london people + security firms overtime, notorious inflexible and greedy).

    It is 3 hours long, 1 hour shorter than Beijing.

    Personally I am not too happy! Danny Boyle has designed a opening ceremony that lasts longer, now think all that resources and efforts gone to waste because someone want to force others playing cinderalla. Possible positives will be now we might get quality over quantity, though hopefully the whole thing will still be coherent like it was intended.

    The ranking rounds for the archery competitions are taking place today. It is closed to the public, but had been labelled as an "unticketed" event. There has been some misunderstanding naturally and some members of the public have shown up at the venue looking to get in. Oh dear.

    If you have some time to kill, there are some interesting tidbits about the past London Olympics and how they compare to this one in this Five Books interview with David Runciman, the political writer for the London Review of Books, among other things.

    Some of the stuff about the 1908 Olys is really . I particularly like that the British gave a special platinum medal special gilded cup to the Italian marathoner .

    I also like the paragraph about the responses to the relatively poor performance of the British team in 1948--so nice not to have to hear "God Save the Queen" played all the time .
