In terms of vault, I actually wonder if we are going to see a surprise (not really with Gold) but the other medals. I think if we see a surprise it will come from Russia. I just can't get Mustafina not even doing vault finals in Europeans and then showing up at Worlds with the surprise Mustafina vault (and coming close to winning Gold on vault) out of my head.

I think Paseka is a prime candidate for this with her Amanar vault, she needs a second vault and maybe even Komova.....Although not sure they'd want Komova to do this given Komova's ankle issues. But Komova is a talented vaulter and a couple of years ago her Amanar had nice form. I wonder if someday she sticks in we will see her do a second vault and win a vault medal...The Russians are good about having their girls train other vaults... Grishina apparently is training the Mustafina.

Perhaps Huang too will have a second vault.

Don't get me wrong I don't see anyone challenging a clean Maroney unless someone has a Cheng and Amanar and can execute both well. But I do think we may see a surprise contender. The Americans really aren't great about getting their Amanar girls to train second vaults, but other nations don't throw away medals.

Mustafina unveiling that surpise vault no matter how not great it was executed was really a great moment. In a world where we know everything due to youbtube. To see Russia pull of that kind of surprise was really cool.

So I was just reading through this thread and remembering that last year for worlds we did a prediction contest using the prediction contest website (designed by Choupette) that we normally use throughout the Figure Skating Season.

Last year we had people enter their predictions after the AA and EF fields were set and ignored alternate substitutions. Last year we had a bit of an issue with ties, but since the Olympics officially does not allow ties, that's no issue here.

It would be pretty easy for me to set the contest up, so if people are interested, I'd be happy to do it.

I would if I weren't surrounded by such great taste. I honestly couldn't even think of another gymnast to put there really, it's kind of Uchimura.... and the others.

I would love to do something like this TG

I feel like Uchimura's AA gold and Maroney's vault gold are the only two results that are pretty much locked at this point--provided neither of them has a total meltdown. She's the best vaulter in the world by a huge margin and he's arguably the greatest gymnast ever. They do their job, they will win.
I would like Komova or Mustafina to win the AA but honestly...I mean, I did not think Nastia would win the AA title 4 years ago. She ended up crushing the competition but I did not think she would, and this years race is much tighter. Something unexpected is bound to happen.

Well her Uneven Bars did the crushing. That apparatus really was completely out of touch with the others. She could have won under any system though vault may have been a problem but she totally deserved her win. Just not with a 0.600 gap which in no way reflected the gymnastics there even if she was much better than Johnson on bars.

Oh and I'll do my predictions in a day or so. Not sure what I'll predict. I am suddenly on the China bandwagon again. I think they may surprise and on another board they were discussing Quishuang's floor from Chinese Nationals and it really is lovely.

I'm surprised that so many people are picking Chusovitina to medal on vault when she's been beaten on that event by her teammate Janine Berger, who has higher D scores (6.3 and 6.0). If she hits, she's much more likely to medal.

Isabelle Severino agrees with you that she is a medal contender. And, really, I just wanted to bring her up since I always liked her gymnastics .

Is Dufournet's d score high enough though both of the Russians are at 7.0 she is a beautiful bar worker though. Beth is an amazing bar worker, very innovative but I'm not sure her execution is up there with the two Russians. And I really hope things are scored fairly. This may be Mustafina's best shot at an individual Olympic medal.

Yes Beth's done a lot but a part of me feels Russia deserves uneven bars gold for the work they've done on the event this quad and bringing bars to sanity from the piroutte overload.

Doesnt Dufournet have a 6.9 bar routine now? She didnt at Europeans but I think she has upgraded since then. That would be close enough to give her a medal chance if she hits perfectly.
