Same question. If you watch the ISU Youtube videos on the subject to which TripleWallie linked upthread, you'll see exactly why I ask. The ISU uses her as an example of a skater whose skating skills are below par, and for good reason.

I'm very surprised that Mirai is being shot so low here. Mirai's SS are definitely better than Wagner's.

I was ok with ranking 7 or 12 skaters but 20 is way too much. Can there by any chance just cut the number of skaters?

I agree with Vagabond's comments though. Laura Lepista has great SS while Tonya Hardings gave me lots of "eeks" for competing at such a high level.

Good list. I agree with everything except Korpi. I'd move her down two spots, I think.

All of the ladies in your embarrassing list are better than Flatt by a large margin. Have you ever seen Rachael skate live? Tracy Wilson once said something to the effect of, "It almost appears as though she's walking through her program as opposed to skating into the ice..."

It seems to me that peaople are putting their favourite skaters higher without looking at their SS. Kwan ahead of Slutskaya and Kostner? Sorry, that's ridiculous. Korpi ahead of Lepisto?

    Exceptional:
    Kostner
    Slutskaya
    Kim

    Very Good:
    Kwan
    Asada
    Rochette

The rest is too much to put them in order.

Frankly, I haven't watched Oksana more than once or twice in my life so I can't tell.

Tonya's SS are rather weak. She has stiff knees what results in having no flow. Her stroking seems to be quite difficult for her. I would say she belongs to "weak" group, maybe not as terrible as Surya but certainly weak.

Shizuka Arakawa. She has possibly the best flow in the history of skating. She softly flies across the ice with completely no effort yet she is powerful at the same time and graceful. I could wath her doing crossovers whole day and I can imagine sound of her blade caressing the ice. Even though she doesn't have the speed of Kostner, Slutskaya or Kim who are arguably the fastest, I would put her in "exceptional" group on the strength of her flow and sureness.

There is another skater who's just come to my mind. It's Fumie Suguri. She used to be as fast Slutskaya and Kim, however she was little behind them in other aspects of SS. I would put her in the same group as Kwan, Rochette and Asada i.e. "very good". Of course I'm talking about her SS in their prime. At nowadays, she's a far cry from her old self.

Yuka Sato right there in the mix with the best. I would put her probably in "very good" group. She has both great flow and great speed. However, not as good flow as Arakawa or Asada in my opinion, and not as good speed as Kostner/Slutskaya/Kim. Honestly, I haven't watched a lot of her skating. I will definitely watch more.

Midori quickly gains speed and is very fast across the ice however she doesn't have the edges of Kwan's or Slutskaya's. Definitely "good", I would say though.

To be honest, I don't know that much about Laura Lepisto because I was pretty much out of the loop last year, and some of this year (from April 2011 to April 2012). To make a long story short ... I was in the hospital part of the time, and then, at a nursing facility working with physical therapists to learn how to walk again. So, I kind of lost a year of keeping up with figure skating (from trying to survive and learning how to walk again).

I'm afraid I still have a lot of catching up to do. Therefore, my list may seem out of sync. As I stated, however, I believe every lady on that list is very talented as far as I'm aware of, and it was a very hard decision for me to make in how I listed them due to the fact that I didn't know some of the history about some of the skaters.

I'm sorry to hear about your ailments and hope you are feeling better now.

But . . . the last time Laura Lepistö skated competitively was when she earned a bronze medal at the World Championships in March 2010, thanks in no small part to her skating skills.

Truthfully, the average list could all be in the embarrassing list, but i tried to spce it out more... And yes, i have actually trained with Rachael ( during olympic season) and she is not as bad as everyone makes her out to be.

She is not BAD at skating skills. You don't win a US National title (no matter how controversial) and medal at GPs with bad skating skills. But when compared to a bunch of Olympic, World, Euro and 4CC medallists on that list, her skating skills is nowhere near adequate. And that is probably why she never medalled at senior international championships even at her most consistent times.

I'm not sure why you guys all think Tonya Harding had not very good skating skills. Her jumps were beyond awesome, of course, but she was considered one of the best spinners of her day and had tons of speed. She wasn't the most graceful, but neither Irina was

I definitely agree about Shizuka, and you're much more articulate than me so thanks for sharing

But skating skills isn't about jumps and spins. It's about relationship between the blade and the ice.

Harding surely was a powerful skater but in terms of edge quality and stroking she was not great. Her skating could hardly be classified as effortless.

I think Yuna's skating skill, especially her edge quality in step sequence is brilliant.
She makes every line on the ice and movements very clear, exact, and fast.
I agree that Carolina and Suzuki' steps is good, but not better than Yuna's.
because sometimes they use the edge sloppily in step sequence.
Especially, Suzuki doesn't skate very clearly in her steps.
