Wrestler facing assault charges after Games

One of Kyrgyzstan’s best Olympic medal hopes will compete in London under threat of a possible jail term after being charged with assault, in a case that has divided opinion in the impoverished former Soviet republic.

Teenage wrestler Aisuluu Tynybekova, a contender in the women’s 63kg freestyle category, will appear in court next month to answer the charge following a fracas outside an ice cream stall in the capital of the central Asian country.

At a hearing yesterday, Judge Saniya Branchayeva postponed the trial until August 15th to allow Ms Tynybekova to compete in London. Her trainer guaranteed her return after the Games.
I love that this happened outside an ice cream stall for some reason.

That is the first article I've read that hasn't mentioned most athletes have been given dispensation by their religious leaders.

It does mention that Egyptian religious leaders have issued a fatwah allowing their athletes to not fast.

    That is a lovely sculpture.

Random, but looking at Photo #34 of the Olympic Stadium, is that big tower/sculpture to the left the site that will host the Olympic flame during the Games?

Hope this is ok to put here. For you AbFab (Absolutely Fabulous) fans, they will be doing an Olympic games themed special this Wednesday Evening (BBC America). It's up on the BBC One website now if you can get that or their youtube channel.

Yahoo sports has been posting their top 8 memorable Olympic moments. #2 is when the great Jesse Owens won four golds in front of Hitler.

Jesse Owens marched into Hitler's Germany and won four gold medals

Owens' four-gold haul in the 1936 Games is the greatest up-yours performance in the history of sport, even if he didn't treat it that way. No one could have questioned Owens had he turned his back on Hitler as he stood on the medal stand those four times, Nazi salutes all around him. But he rose above that.

"I've always hoped to be a motivating force for good," he said, "because people have given so much to me."

The greatness of Jesse Owens wasn't just that he won four gold medals in Hitler's backyard. It's how he won – with class.

Munich would have been my top moment. What a horrible tragedy that was. But I'm guessing that since Yahoo Sports is a USA entity, their top moment will be the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" hockey team defeat of USSR in the game that decided who went on to the gold medal final.

ETA: I was wrong. They stuck to summer Olympics only and decided on

I posted this in the Royalty thread, but in case people don't read that, here's where you can do some Royal watching at the Olympics.

HBO did a special on the "Miracle on Ice" on one of the anniversaries (maybe 25th?) that was fascinating. It did a great job of placing the event against the backdrop of the political events of the era and capturing the spirit. I remember the first time I went to Lake Placid, I was stunned at how small the arena was for an "Olympic" event, but it still felt special.

ETA: Cyclist Dan Martin's take on the Olympic Village (per twitter):
"its like Liverpool in the 80s, everyone in bright coloured shell suits thinkin they're the sh**"
