I can't imagine how enrollment isn't going to be damaged. Why would anyone choose to go to such a school where this is not only allowed to happen, but encouraged to happen. Who would willingly associate their name with such a school?

As long as they have accreditation, students who live nearby who can't afford to go off to college will still go there. And anyone getting a scholarship to Penn State & nowhere else will go. But you're right, students who went there for the name will choose somewhere else.

I imagine the warning status was just so Penn State could be monitored. Everyone who should lose his/her job probably hasn't yet...they still have some rotten apples to get rid of, including everyone who thinks anything goes as long as it glorifies football.

The accreditation warning is a tool used to assure that the university addresses issues in governance that the Sandusky case shows were weak or non-existent. It is not expected to result in loss of accreditation as PSU will have a two year process to ensure that they are complying and administrators have been cooperating in the beginning of that process.

Penn state has been f-ing their students over for years. Schools lose their accredidations when they fail to provide a quality education. How is allowing a school to continue accepting money and profit from students they fail to protect fair on the students? If there are no other schools to attend in pa, then all the more reason to abolish this monopoly. I live in the smallest state in the union and we have multiple state universities to choose from.

As a student at Penn State, I can say, without a doubt, the education that I am receiving at Penn State is excellent. The quality is there. Oh, by the way, I am an adult learner at Penn State. The professors expect their students to do the very best they can.

I don't agree with heckles at all. I think there would be just as much outrage if this had been little girls. It's not like male rape victims don't face similar issues in this country.

However, there was some pretty massive fail in the coverage of the gang rape of an 11 year old girl in texas last year.

A lot of students I've spoken to, who might not normally get into Penn State, have been wondering if Penn State's recent troubles might not create opportunity for them. I have been advising them that it may, and that they should apply if they like the school. When other schools have faced significant bad press/major issues in the past, the year afterwards often sees a dip in applicants, so students whose academics might not have normally gotten them in, can sometimes get in. But often, in the years that follow, things normalize re: stats again.

In effect, I've basically been seeing more interest in Penn State this year, for this reason. We'll have to see how it all falls out re: applications and yield.

force? Hystrionic much. Accredidation agencies rank a schools merits so students can decide to attend or not. If a school promotes an unsafe environment where the administration organizes a long range intentional protection of a person in power to abuse an underling, then the accredidation board should just look the other way and only advise on academics? I thought the use of the word "force" was kind of strange in that context. Regional accredidation agencies do their job based on facts...what students do afterwards is their own decision. If a university loses its accredidation of course students won't go there if they want a degree. But no one forces them to do anything.

University of Michigan has taken action regarding a six month delay in investigating a child porn matter at their university-affiliated hospital.
