Does anyone else find it absolutely astounding that Michelle performed Salome and Romanza to win nationals and worlds 4 years after that 1992 program? Talk about growth as a skater...every year between 1992-1996 she improved by leaps and bounds.

She did. In 1995 with her Violin LP had she made any attempt to look older than 12 y/o, I think she could have won. But Danny, who always called all the shots, said NO HAIR NO MAKEUP. At least he opened his eyes after Birmingham when she legitimately could have won. So Frank and Lori finally appealed to his competitive nature and told him she needs an older look. And look what we got a few months later. The change was astounding, but she was just about ready in Birmingham too, but just didn't look the part.

Gordeeva/Grinkov's "Zorba the Greek" SP (1984 Junior Worlds in December 1983 in Sapporo, Japan): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AeOkEdvTQc

This is their earliest known televised (outside of the U.S.S.R.) competition video - she was 12 and he 16. G&G were 6th in the SP, 5th in FS, and 5th overall. They won Junior Worlds one year later and their first World title just a little over 2 years later!

Thank you for posting this. It seems unbelievable that they would be paired together since she was soooo small. I guess the fed still wanted the gorilla and flea thing. But it is hard to watch because what, 11 years later, they are grown adults with a child and he dies of a cardiac arrest on the ice with her. It's sad to see Sergei and then know the countdown. At least they grew up and achieved greatness in the sport which is their legacy. But this skinny kinda cute guy died 11 years later. Very sad. I enjoy this performance so much because it catches a young pair that don't have "IT" yet, but transcended the sport just a few years later. Thanks, Sylvia.

Joubert (1998 gala performance here) didn't really have any great success as a junior, and I think looking at his skating in 2000 compared to what he did in his first senior season, you can see why.

I wonder if there's any video of Florent as a child, say, pre-2002? The pictures on his website make me think that the cuteness would be extreme.

    Some more:
Aliona Savchenko and Stanislav Morozov in 2000.
Nobunari Oda at his first Junior Worlds (2004), where I believe there were no counting mistakes?
And Yuzuru Hanyu in 2004 and in 2006.

As I recall, G&G were one of the early gorilla and flea teams. Teams before them, like Valova and Vasiliev, were more evenly matched in size.

No, the term started in the 1970s, before Valova/Vasiliev.

    Notably Cherkasova/Shakrai

Maybe the early years of Pestova/Leonovich
