Thinking about coming up 10/26 for Pina Bausch.
I think I will have a snack and take a nap before I eat and go to sleep.

Alas, I'd decided to see SFB but couldn't get the time off from work. Never mind, I may still get to DC before the year is over.
Why have I never heard of the wonderful Smuin Ballet before? They were fab.

emason and I both enjoyed the PNB presentation at the Guggenheim last week.
The topic was Ballanchine; specifically, the way his choreography changed over the years. Peter Boal is a terrific speaker, articulate and witty. (he could give tips to a certain AD ) I was mjorly impressed with Carla Korbes (sorry I can't do the umlauts) and Seth Orza.
I found it amusing when Seth was demonstrating a move, and Peter kept repeating, "Now, look at Seth." I thought, "Well, you don't have to tell me twice!"
    (He is swoon-worthy)

Foy anyone interested in Morphoses: they are performing in Sweden on Oct 23, and Scandinavia House (in NYC) will stream the performance live. It's free. If you go, I suggest you check out the gift shop as they usually have Geisha chocolates. (Overpriced, of course, but the only place I've found them in NYC)
The restaurant is pretty decent, too.

Repulsive news: Ivan Vasiliev has joined ABT as principal.
I'm with Haglund as far as the direction ABT has been taking lately.
    http://haglundsheel.typepad.com/haglunds_heel/
I strongly doubt whether I will be suscribing to ABT again in the near future. And I will avoid Vasiliev, Osipova and Simkin like the plague.
    That is all.

I have to admit that I'm still wondering why ABT is considered one of the top ballet companies in the country, as opposed to an excuse to see guests/guest principals like Cojocaru and Vishneva and the place where Marcelo Gomes is, but I've heard almost nothing but good-to-great things about Osipova's performances (even if she was meh in the "Giselle" movie, and as if the Mariinsky didn't have principals to dance the role.)

I find her vulgar and sloppy. She's good at pole dancing, though.

Don't get me started on Vasiliev. He should join the Trocks. Ha!

Sorry, but vulgar for me is epitomized by Anna Netrebko in the Met's loathsome production of Manon. Nothing I have seen ballet-wise touches that.

I've liked Osipova in what I've seen so far; maybe I just picked the right performances; her Kitri was amazing, but, then again, I am the original no teknik viewer.

I've enjoyed Vasiliev too, but I wouldn't buy a ticket on the strength of his name, and, yes, he really is more suited to the Trocks.

Nothing? Two words: Alina Somova. (...and that great roar heard 'round the world was the cheer of ballet fans when her pregnancy was announced a week ago. Nine months of glory.)

I love Osipova. Her Giselle with Hallberg was amazing.

I have only seen Vasiliev in Spartacus, and I found him sloppy and vulgar, but nearly the whole ballet is either sloppy or vulgar or both.

I don't get Somova at all.

Mariinsky is coming to DC in October with Cinderella (Ratmansky blah) and I have Thursday night tickets to see Pavlenko. Anyone think I should switch nights?

I went to NYCB's dancer chat on Friday evening; the dancer in question turned out to be soloist Antonio Carmena. What a charmer! I asked him if he remembered his first time on stage with NYCB. He did - he was one of the adults in the party scene in "The Nutcracker" and was a mouse on the same evening.
If you've never been to one of these things, it's basically Q&A between the dancer and the audience. Most of the questions put to him were interesting and intelligent. I took notes, so I can elaborate if anyone is interested.

Random ballet anecdote: I went to see NYCB on Friday; during the intermission I was sitting on one of the benches outside the orchestra, munching on a Milka chocolate bar (a gift from a coworker) I had this sensation that someone was staring at me; I could feel someone's eyes boring into me. I glanced to my left and the starer was none other than Joaquin De Luz. However, it was not me he was staring at, but the chocolate bar - he seemed riveted! Without thinking, I held it out to him and said, "want a piece?" He seemed to come out of a reverie, mumbled, "No! No thanks, I am on a diet!" and rushed away.

I am going to see ABT take company class on Oct 20th. Info here, if anyone would like to join me:

OK, tonight I am off to Fall for Dance; I am really looking forward to Ballet West and Paquita. Going tomorrow night also; I could not resist the idea of the all-male Hawaiian dance group - the promo picture shows grass skirts. I am ready for voids.

Went last week too; saw Jared Grimes Transformations in Tap. I'm a sucker for tap, so really enjoyed that. Next up was Fang-Yi Sheu & Artists - Five Movements, Three Repeats. Guest artists were Tyler Angle, Craig Hall and Wendy Whelan of NYCB. It had its moments, but it also had some rough spots. Next up was Nederlands Dans Theater doing Shutters Shut with Astrid Boons and Quentin Roger. This was THE highlight of the evening. The program describes it as a 'short study of the poem written and read by Gertrude Stein: "If I told him: A completed portrait of Picasso" (1912).' No teknik me thought this was outstanding. Last on the bill was BalletBoyz doing Void; I so wanted to love them. They should have been able to bring down the house, but they didn't. Not sure what was wrong, but it just didn't work and the audience was underwhelmed.

Look what I found! Dunno why he was wearing his jammies, but Jose looks divine in anything.

Is anyone from NYC seeing any ballet next week? I've got NYCB on the 14th, and ABT on the 17th and the 18th.

I received ABT's Spring season brochure in the mail this afternoon. They want me to renew my subscription, even though I did not renew it last year. And I won't subscribe in 2013, either. The entire season looks like a big snooze. The only thing I'm planning to see is Swan Lake, and that's because my handsome guy Alex will be making his debut. Not because I want to see ABT's dreadful production again.

Is anyone seeing ABT at City Center this week? I will be there Wed and Thurs.

Got my renewal today also - for the seats I bought 2 seasons ago. Wonder how the person who actually bought those seats last year feels? Why can't ABT get it together just once?

Wish I could go to ABT this week, but I can't. I wanted to see tomorrow night's program, but I have Santa Fe-Aspen at the Joyce and I wanted to go to Friday's matinee, but I have to work that day, so no ABT for me. At least I'm seeing something this week, even if, as I suspect, it won't be very good.

However, Marge, aren't you doing RDB next Monday with me?

Yup! I have 2 weeks off so I'm doing a bit of a "staycation"
ABT on the 17th and 18th, plus I am seeing them take class on the 20th.
RDB on the 22nd, and Ballet Next on the 24th.
    Plus some other demented activities.
Let me know if you want to do dinner.
