    Thanks. It really is haunting. Makes me sad all over again to have lost him.

    PL, are you teaching There will come soft rains as part of your apocalypse/dystopia class?*
    Here's the Sara Teasdale poem that inspired the story:

    There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
    And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

    And frogs in the pools singing at night,
    And wild plum trees in tremulous white;

    Robins will wear their feathery fire,
    Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

    And not one will know of the war, not one
    Will care at last when it is done.

    Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
    If mankind perished utterly;

    And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn
    Would scarcely know that we were gone.

    Does anyone remember the story The Veldt? but really great.

    "Nature is a damp, inconvenient sort of place where birds and animals wander about uncooked."

    I do a Cold War lit unit with my sophomores, and that's where we read it. I open with the poem and we go from there.

    We also watch the totally jacked up Ukranian animated short film of it. The kids are always speechless after the viewing.

    What a wonderful talent he was and what a wonderful life. May he rest in peace.
