I saw an interview w/Mark Tewksbury, Canada's Chief de Mission, and during it he said that athletes are being allowed to march and then leave as soon as it's possible for the first time ever. If that's so, could a flagbearer still take part, then leave to prepare to compete the next day?

Nice, that's a rather groovy choice, IMHO.

Oh cool, I remember when she won in Athens - I was watching with my brother at a sports bar and Zagunis was so surprised at her own win. It was a great moment. I did fencing in college so it was great to see.
I think I will have a snack and take a nap before I eat and go to sleep.

^^^ A half dozen posts up thread -- Mariel Zagunis (fencing OGM in Athens).

Oops -- never mind. (I was interrupted mid post by a co-worker telling me that she had just accepted a new job.)

Nice choice - if only because the US fencing was not very good for many years. Now both the men's and women's teams are excellent.

Fantastic choice! It seems like the last few Olympics they chose Olympians who weren't that well-known, but I definitely know who Mariel is. Her win in Athens was pretty big, and I remember her being in the newspaper because I was visiting in Oregon at the time near her hometown. And then when she won AGAIN in Beijing, it was just really cool. She's been a real ground-breaker for US Women's Fencing and she deserves the honor of bearing the flag.

    Great choice for Australia.

New Zealand has chosen Nick Willis to be flagbearer. He won Bronze in the 1500m in Beijing which was upgraded to Silver as the winner was found to have abused substances. Apparently just 39 athletes for NZ will be in the opening ceremony. I've often wondered whether the first day of competition shouldn't be a more quiet affair so more athletes can participate in the opening ceremony.

Rolf Göran Bengtson, equestrian, for Sweden.

Norway finally decided on Mira Verås Larsen, a paddler. Her husband Erik is more known, as he has actually won something in earlier Olympics lol, but Mira is really sweet, and her great grandfather won Norways first Olympic gold ever, in 1906. She's not competing until later tough, she preparing at home, and flies to London just to carry the flag!
