That surprises me a bit, as usually it's a member of their Soccer team as their Flagbearer isn't it? Not that it's not deserved, as I follow Equestrian Sport and know Pessoa's accomplishments and am thrilled for him recieving this honour.

But still surprising in a way.

No. In fact, 2004 and 2008 were both from sailing and 2000 was from beach volleyball.

Roger Federer just turned down the offer to carry the Swiss flag again (he already did in 2004 and 2008). He wants to give the opportunity to another athlete.

Canada's flagbearer will be announced tomorrow on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

According to this CTV article, Despatie will decline any offer to carry the flag.

I'm thinking Simon Whitfield or Ian Miller.

I think those are pretty much the two leading candidates Parsley Sage and I won't have a problem w/either one.

Thanks for the info. I was just about to check the COC's website to see when the announcement would be made.

    From NBC Olympics on twitter:

Qatar, sending women to the #Olympics for the first time, will have a female flag-bearer: shooter Bahiya al-Hamad.

Simon is such a fabulous choice. He's just an unreal human being - I know extended members of his family and it's easy to understand where he gets his humlity, his sense of humor and just him being such a down to earth person from. the COC couldn't have made a better choice!

Simon! He's such a classy, wonderful guy. Terrific choice by the COC.

His silver medal in Beijing is still one of my favourite Olympic moments of all time.
