Finally saw A Separation, the Oscar-winning foreign language film. It was only okay. My biggest disappointment was that I thought it was going to be more "about" gender politics in Iran. Those issues did play into the story, but in a fairly minor way. Normally I quite like it when a "foreign" film shows aspects of life and humanity that are universal, could be the people next door. But in this case I felt somewhat let down -- again, mostly because of my expectations. Not a bad film, just not what I was expecting.

Well, I must beg to differ. I thought this was one of the best, if not the best, movies I saw in all of the last year. I just loved it and was not disappointed one bit; I saw it with a friend and it gave us much to talk about - the movie stayed with us for quite a long time.

Like I say, expectations have a lot to do with these things. If I'd seen it before all the hooplah I might have had a different reaction. And I didn't hate it, I just didn't love it. There were some lovely bits, esp. with the grandfather, and the heartbreaking stuck-in-the-middle situation of the daughter. But I thought it focussed far too much on the "mystery case" and not nearly enough on the family dynamics -- which is what I expected it to be about, esp. given the title and the film's write-up.

Trailer for Red Dawn which will be released in November. It looks good but Hemsworth's accent isn't convincing and whichever government is portrayed as invader will not be happy. LOL

A movie review and then mention of some imdb.com posts that made me squeal with laughter!

Saw The Odd Life of Timothy Green the other day. Really liked it. Jennifer Garner is great at those sweet, emotional roles. CJ Adams as Timothy Green is the sweetest, most charming kid out there. And Joel Edgerton is kinda porny. Bring some hankies!

Although as I said to my friend after the movie ended, if they had milked the scene of digging in the garden where they thought Timothy had returned, especially showing Jennifer Garner's face and reaction...I would have "bawled like a banshee"!!!

Just got "Immortals" from the library. Was reading the message boards at imdb.com and one poster asks

"would getting your weiner smashed with a giant mallet really make you infertile?" One response: "Why not give it a try and report back here with the results?"

Couple of thoughts...

Saw the new Bourne movie....boy what a disapointment. Sort of a plot-less movie that even the very good Jeremy Renner couldn't save.

The new Red Dawn also features a major role for Josh Peck of Drake and Josh fame. Huge role for him trying to break into more adult parts.

And I'll be seeing the new Anna movie in large part because Joe Wright is directing.

Last night I finally watched Pi, which had been on my list for a while. (Wow, I'm surprised, it came out in 1998 -- for some reason I thought it was more recent than that.) It was weird. Really weird. Mostly in a good way ... but there were some moments I could have lived without. Not to mention the uber-grainy black&white picture. But still, I'm glad I watched it.

Town"-it's dumb and dumber, which I guess was okay since really all I wanted to see was Jeremy Renner and Ben Afflek.

Going now to see if library has "A Seperation" -was on my to see list, and still want to see. Oh wait, I can't-I am working my way thru the 5 DVDs of Julia Child's The French Chef and I can only hope to God the one I got today does not have anymore horrific cooking imagery! I still have tripe-trauma, aaaaaaaaaaargh!!!

They aired that on PBS's Masterpiece last year some time. I thought it was extremely well done, due entirely to the excellence of both Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson. I don't think every poem could be brought to screen in a similar way, but this one definitely worked.

I finally got around to watching The Dictator, and while I did find a lot of the gags really funny, I'm glad that I waited for the DVD.

A couple of weeks ago, I watched Garbo in Anna Karenina for the umpteenth time, which is one of my absolutely favorite classic films, along with Ninotchka, which was on a few days earlier (both on TCM).

Even though it was riddled with commercial interruptions, I watched Blade Runner 2 1/2 times this weekend on SyFy, arguably one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever made (and one of Ridley Scott's best-directed movies). Of course, the young, brooding Harrison Ford doesn't hurt . Then again, I'm partial to the novels of Phillip K. Dick (BR was based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - one of my favorite novels).

I never made it to see the remake of Total Recall - not sure if it's still in the theatre; if it is, I'll try to go see it, if not, I'll watch it On Demand.

I read in Entertainment Weekly that The Hunger Games has passed 400 million domestically and over 250 million for the rest of the world (on a budget of 80 million). But the movie won't be released until September in Japan. I think I posted earlier about how many movies are now being released elsewhere in the world before in North America. So I'm surprised that this movie is getting such a late release date for Japan. I would think Japan would be a very good market for this movie. Can't for the life of me think why they are releasing it so late there. Wonder how many paying customers will find a pirated version instead of waiting so long to pay to see it. (Dumb Hollywood!! )

It drove me nuts too. I'm also a bit ADD and I found Blade Runner very hard to focus on. I ended up missing more than half of it because I started playing around on my laptop and have felt like I need to rewatch it ever since.

No, Colin Farrell is much hotter.

Two movies that I give a BIG thumbs up to:

The Mighty (Kieran Culkin, Gena Rowlands, Gillian Anderson, Harry Dean Stanton, Meat Loaf and Sharon Stone

This is one of those movies that should be on those lists "Great movies you've never heard of". Kieran Culkin plays a handicapped youth who forms a friendship with another alienated youth. It's great to see youth people use their imaginations, intelligence and courage to make the most out of their lives. It's also a bit of a weepy, so some Kleenex nearby might be in order. Kieran Culkin is a really great actor...Hollywood needs to give him a lot more work.

Soundtack For A Revolution

A wonderful documentary. From imdb.com: "Tells the story of the American civil rights movement through its powerful music - the freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality."

There are performances of many songs throughout the movie by John Legend, Mary Mary, Richie Havens, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean and Angie Stone (amont others). I downloaded the soundtrack before I even finished watching the movie! This movie made me realize that music should play a much larger role in social change movements.
