What sad news. To me Donna Summer is the voice of the late 70's - so many great songs that brought so much joy to those of us who lived through that era. Gone far too soon. May she rest in peace.

RIP Ms. Summers, you had an incredible voice, and your music still makes me smile. I still do listen to it once in a while.

So sad and such a shock. She had lung cancer. She deliberately kept it quiet. Heard that she believed that she got lung cancer from breathing the air post 9/11.

I saw the headline when I opened my browser a few minutes ago. Definitely wasn't expecting to see that news While the disco-era was before my time, I still have numerous songs of hers on my iPod. RIP Donna.

I had no idea she was suffering from cancer. What a loss to the music world. May she rest in peace.

The top 10 Donna Summer songs you might not have ever heard (my personal list):

Fascination (from All Systems Go…try also Dinner With Gershwin and Thinkin’ About My Baby)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wmtzO1WSM8
I personally think this is one of the best recordings of all time. So moody and heartfelt and subtly dramatic. A classic, IMHO.

Love Is Just A Breath Away (from her self-titled album…try also If It Hurts Just A Little)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xyDU0es_tE
This is from her album produced by Quincy Jones, hot off his work with Michael Jackson. I heard Jones made Summer cry during these sessions, challenging her in regards to the vocal work of Chaka Khan. Not sure about his methods, but Summer was on fire!

My Baby Understands (from Bad Girls..try also Our Love, Journey to the Center of Your Heart, On My Honor, Walk Away and There Will Always Be A You)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLk9HvU4GZg
Summer goes all Mary J. Blige on our asses towards the end of this track!!!

Forgive Me (from Cats Without Claws…try also Supernatural Love and There Goes My Baby)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzClvtK8fBo
Summer won her fourth Grammy for this track for "Best Inspirational Performance". Well deserved, as it makes this atheist a believer!!

Protection (from her self-titled album…try also The Woman In Me and Mystery Of Love)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBzoIJdPiZI
Written by Bruce Springsteen, this was originally planned as a duet between the two, but ended up being "unworkable". Oh, what might have been!!!

Now I Need You (from Once Upon A Time…try also Rumour Has It and I Love You)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHjgZwRNR9c
An early Euro-disco track, with Donna showing off her vocal range and challenging you to not get up and MOVE!!!

Love's About to Change My Heart (from Another Place and Time)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMmMuM-j3Rw
This was a single release, but did not get the airplay it deserved. Another example of Summer going for broke as the song concludes. Damn!!!

Mimi’s Song (from Live! And More!)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x95G2-sJFao
Get out your hankies. Summer wrote this song for her daughter in attempt to make up for the time missed together while Summer was trying to manage a red-hot career. Did I mention get out the Kleenex?

Breath of Heaven (from Christmas Spirit…try also O Holy Night)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REgW2nbKxtY
Also recorded by Amy Grant among others, this is a wonderfully beautiful song. A real treasure.

I Do Believe I Fell In Love (from She Works Hard For The Money…try also Unconditional Love and Love Has A Mind Of It’s Own and Supernatural Love)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCObD-pSz1I
Just when you thought you were listening to a lullaby, the tempo slowly picks up until Summer is burning down the barn!!! :40beers)
It's official. I am madly in love with Meryl Davis.

That was what the radio announcer said this afternoon. Said it came from her family.

That a pretty happy personal list. Surprised you didn't mention Friends Unknown, He's a Rebel or Cold Love.

RIP Donna Summer! She was just incredible in Zurich February 2011, in Art on Ice. I was in tears then. as now. Will try to find the links. I guess the skaters are so grateful to have been able to skate to her live singing.

I didn't know until I read on the WQXR* website that she started in musical theater and operetta:

I forgot about Friends Unknown, that's a hidden treasure for sure. And I like your other two picks, "Cold Love" didn't make my list because it was a top 40 single (the second from "The Wanderer" album).
It's official. I am madly in love with Meryl Davis.
