Maurice Sendak has died

One of my husband's favorite artists. I attended the Nutcracker in Seattle many times, for which he'd designed the set in the mid-1970s (still being used and still awesome!). And I was in love with the "Really Rosie" album (sung by Carole King) and had every song memorized.

He was also the designer for Nutcracker - The Motion Picture, my own personal favorite of all the Nutcrackers on video, and I also have the hardcover edition of The Nutcracker illustrated by Sendak.

A unique and imaginative artist - he will be missed.

He contributed so much to literature and reading as well as art. The family joke when the "Little Bear" cartoon came on TV: "Naptime for Mommy." That show put me out every time I heard the theme song, lol.

I still have my little very well-thumbed Nutshell Library
by Maurice Sendak sitting on my office bookshelf (copyright 1962, and it was bought for me then, when I was not even 2).

Unique and wonderful work. RIP

There was a great interview with him not too long ago -- quite the curmudgeon, and boy did it make for some great stories and art.

Probably my favorite memory is the time we checked out the "Where the Wild Things Are" video from the library, only to find that it was an opera with costumes he'd designed. We loved that tape -- checked it out many, many times. I wish I could find it on DVD.

We've also got that little red nutshell library, and still frequently reference Pierre.

His long-time partner died quite some time ago. RIP Maurice Sendak.

I loved that collection! My favorite in it was: Pierre, a Cautionary Tale in Five Chapters.

Aw ... so sorry to hear this. Loved his books & illustrations for them. There is a museum in Philly, The Rosenbach Museum, that showcases a lot of his artwork. I wonder if they will expand the exhibit even more now.
