It's 2700 miles away for me.
That won't deter me, if I can work out the details.

True, and the USFSA needs to ask themselves why there are so few volunteers. As I understand it, they have a lot of financial requirements for would-be bidders. Skating events are no longer selling out arenas. The USFSA needs to recognize that and reexamine its assumptions about its event planning process.

From the 2012 Skate America Bid Information (PDF) document posted on the USFS site:
    OVERVIEW
U.S. Figure Skating, the National Governing Body for figure skating in the
United States is seeking proposals from a local organizing committee
(LOC) to partner with in hosting Hilton HHonors 2012 Skate America, Oct.
17-21, 2012. The LOC is defined by U.S. Figure Skating as a U.S. Figure
Skating member club, Facility Management Group, Promoter, Convention
and Visitors Bureau, Sports Commission or any combination of these
organizations. The successful LOC will work directly with U.S. Figure
Skating leadership to support the event through volunteer recruitment,
off-ice functions (officials dinner, competitor party), ground
transportation and procuring local community support (grants, cash/VIK
    sponsorship).

Maybe they are trying to lobby for events like this on a state/county level to make the proposed/planned/questioned new hockey/basketball arena more attactive (Big Seattle Drama about how to get NBA back, and get NHL in town - and who foots the arena bill)

Well, at least for those of us in the Midwest, Skate Canada is essentially in Detroit. It's only a 5 hour drive for me, so I'm going to Windsor, Ontario. Wheee. Already have my ticket.

I'm excited, but am starting to feel guilty about all the events on the West Coast lately. :/ Seattle is one of my favorite cities, though, so I'm excited! (Though I know the even is not actually in Seattle proper.)

Much as I'd like to go to Lake Placid for an event. it has been prohibitive from where I am.
At least I can get to Kent/Seattle!

Actually, I don't think clubs are even involved in the awarding of Nats anymore. The past few years, it has seemed to be some sort of local tourism or sports/business group that handled the bid process and the event organization.

The likely scenario is not kowtowing/pandering but the financial logistics of everything. Like it or not, figure skating does not draw the crowds in anymore. The large arenas are too expensive given the need to secure/pay for the time, disrupting other more viable (i.e. revenue generating) sports schedules in addition to the area's volunteer base.

Face it, it costs mega bucks to put on and host an event. The ISU and USFSA will be looking for ways to still put on the event and make it either break even or make money. They need that in their coffers.

And sk9tingfan, I believe it was you who complained about the "jacking up" or hotel costs once someone got wind of the ability to make money in Omaha. Did you do cost comparisons with the type of room available or anything else? There are also hotels/inns within 1 mile or slightly more that are less than $109 per night. Some even $79.00 a night. I know - I did a search for the dates of the event and downtown hotels/motels.

I like events in the EST zone because they are most convenient for me to watch. DON'T YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND IT'S ALL ABOUT ME! Now, I'll have to stay up past midnight.

    YES!!!!!!
I've been to this arena for hockey games and it's a tiny but very nice arena. Both times I was there I was thinking that it would be PERFECT for Skate America. There's a very nice mall right next door that will be great for restaurant breaks. I'm so psyched!
