I am going to post this, one of about 100 op-eds I've read on Israel's birthday, because it is tender and funny. Sorry, can't provide a link, so here's the whole thing:

    Our Own Startup
Yedioth Ahronoth (p. 3) by Raanan Shaked (commentary) -- In the Land of Israel, the Jewish people arose to another morning of traffic jams, work, news flashes and meetings; It was there that their spiritual, religious, crude barbecue-making, familial, Eyal Golan-inspired identity was shaped. Here they first attained statehood, along with hostile online comments, created cultural values of national significance along with soap operas, and gave to the world the eternal Book of Books, Wisdom of the Pretzel [this is a paraphrasing of Israel’s declaration of independence].
Ahh, if only the declaration of independence could be a bit more up-to-date! “We extend our hand in an offer of peace, and reach to our wallet with the other”; “This right is the natural right of the Jewish people, and if you don’t like that one, we also have an artificial right made in China”; “On the basis of the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly—yes, this body that we consider irrelevant”; and of course: “the State of Israel will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants, and if you can read this—then we’re referring to you, and only you.”
The declaration of independence has not yet been updated, but even 64 years later, the original text still represents clearly what we would like to say to the world and to ourselves: That we, all of us, are startup entrepreneurs. Sixty-four years ago, we managed to persuade a few American investors to put money on the idea of a Middle Eastern democracy that would mainly do one thing: Give a response to the burning need of several dozen million users around the world for a homepage for the Jewish people.
Since then, we have been working in this startup for 64 years—working hard, putting our heart and soul into it, releasing more and more versions with improvements, corrections and bug fixes—and our hope is not yet lost, even though it is not certain that there will be an exit in the end. In fact, our very first entrepreneur, David Ben-Gurion, understood back then that the most he would succeed in making from this venture would be money for a hut of his own in the Negev. We, for our part, follow in his footsteps; the largest exit that we can imagine is an apartment of our own.
    Sometimes we attain one.
But most of the time, as in every startup, we are convinced that we, personally, would have done everything different and better; that the management is no good; that this is not what the founders intended; and that if we would only get an offer to leave, we would not hesitate more than a day or two before deciding to stay right here.
For it is not that we have no other country; we do. But we have no other startup. No other place that we can feel towards it, for it and against it anything with comparable intensity. Only Israel does to us what a startup is supposed to do: It keeps us interested, alert, involved, hopeful, with options, needing to know where this is going and understanding that it will go wherever we choose to lead it. In other words, it is completely in our hands.
It, and this extra pita bread that we didn’t need to take.

Yes, that sounds about right I wonder what Ben-Gurion would make of the Israel at 64. It's certainly quite different from the Israel I grew up in...

    And happy birthday to us
