    I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him last year, and he struck me as being a very humane and worldly person, as well as a devoted family man.

    ETA my post from the FSU Archives last year:
    BTW, the journalist who originally coined this infamous/famous "single tear" was told how this phrase has passed into legend here [at FSU] and seemed quite bemused by it all.
    Randy Starkman was the journalist, and he signed off his email to me as follows:
    Totally honoured by this ... I think.

    I’m sorry to hear this. Only 51. We met him at the GPF and he was very pleasant. I’ll miss reading his skating coverage.

    He was well respected by the athletes (in all the amateur sports that he covered) and by other journalists/reporters - there are many articles being posted by both in the wake of his death.

    Condolences to his wife and daughter, his colleagues, and others impacted by his death at way too young an age.

    He will certainly be missed!

    When Lance Brown announced this during the CTV Toronto Sports cast Monday night, I was literally sitting there in shock w/my mouth hanging open. Could not believe my ears and still don't quite believe it.

    As many have said Randy was one of the best, but was also one of the rare journalists who was not only good, but totally and completely caring about his beat. Which was Amateur Sports in Canada. I always read his articles, because I knew he wasn't just writing because it was his job, but because he cared and knew what he was talking about to boot.

    Amateur Sports and the athletes who represent Canada on the World Stage lost a true friend this week.

    Gone far too young and my condolences to his Family and Friends.

    God Speed to him and may Randy Rest In Peace.
