For dance and pairs possibly, I think it won't work for singles.

It'll make things more interesting, since people too often skate to the same instrumentals. Plus, it might drawn in more fans if people skate to pop music.

I hate vocals in skating. I don't even like them in ice dancing; certainly not in other disciplines. They distract from the skating. It will make skating more like a theater and the sport will lose whatever credibility is remaining.

Considering what some skaters listen to in their spare time: NO NO NO NO NO!
There will be far too many shitty pop music programs.

I think it will be wonderful for the sport. The same tired themes have been done to death. Anything breathing new life into skating is a good thing.

I'm not necessarily opposed to it. I need a season to see what the skaters do.
Still, I shudder to consider what screechy X-tina program Adelina might come up with next year

I'm opposed, and opposed and opposed.
It will distract from actual skating, and skaters will use the last top song.
I don't want to hear Rihanna or I don't know who on the ice !

The lyrics being distracting is a real concern, but Davis and White's SD is a good example of one other reason why I'm dreading vocals expanding into all of figure skating.. I couldn't help but be distracted during I Could Have Danced All Night. Martine McCutcheon was just awful in that recording. Totally poor choice for the role.

That's the thing about allowing vocals. There's going to be a lot of bad singing. I am not a fan of the way most programs treat the instrumental works they cut and glue together, but at least there is a certain basic level of quality that the orchestras/instrumentalists on the recordings meet. Some pro orchestras are better than others, sure, but you'll never hear the orchestra equivalent of Katy Perry's singing. And even many pro non-"classically trained" instrumentalists ar good enough to play popular music without making you want to scream. You can't say the same for the singers.

I don't think the judges are capable of separating the skating from the emotion of the singing, just they they couldn't see past the audience's reactions in Sochi.

Not only are they capable of separating it, they did in Sochi.

Did the USFSA start letting skaters use vocal music this season? Annabelle Morozov had a great program with vocal music at Nationals in juvenile girls.

At intermediate and below (and all adult levels) it has been allowed for 5 seasons now I believe. In my experience it still isn't very common except at the very lowest levels.

Just curious, would you have had any problems with the vocals if it had been Julie Andrews singing it?

I voted for Yes, but I just hope that we won't be bombarded with super bad POP songs left and right.

I think this could potentially lead to a campy "Fergalicious" awful train wreck of a program, so in that sense I'm all for it.

However after the fun of the GP wears off and my skating snob personality chip is in for the big events, I will completely abandon ship and want my Don Quioxte back.

Yes, I love some gala programs with vocals or words in music.
