Very generous people who you don't know

My mum was telling me this story today.

A group of about 7 (including my mum) went to a local Indian Restaurant last night. The bill tallied up to about $300. However when they went to pay someone who had been there earlier in the evening paid it for them. Just a total stranger who told the restaurant staff that they looked like they were having such a good time he would pay their bill for them.

Apparently he has also done it at that restaurant twice before.

Quite amazing. And a very nice thing to do.

Has this ever happened to you?

Something similar happened to me last year.
I went to buy a ticket for the Paul Taylor dance company at City Center. As I was waiting in line, a woman approached me and asked if I needed a ticket. The show wasn't even close to being sold out, so I figured I might get a good bargain, if she was selling a ticket. She handed me the ticket, which was right in the center of the mezzanine. Even if she was selling at half off, it was more than I was planning on spending. So I said, "Uh, no thanks, I didn't want to spend that much money." She said, "I am not selling it, I can't attend the show so I am giving it away." She refused to take any money and walked away.

That happened to my mom too. Not quite the $$ amount as your story, but still nice. She was 80, and I think it was one of the last times she was really able to be out and about by herself. She had stopped at a Bob Evans for lunch and when she asked the waitress for the bill, she told her a man at the counter had paid for her bill. The man was already gone by then so she couldn't thank him. I didn't know people like this existed based on my own experiences with people in general.

Actually I did have someone at an art gallery give me a ticket for a renaissance painting exhibition that was on. I was looking at some modern art when we struck up a conversation. She asked me if I had seen the exhibition. When I replied no she told me to take her ticket. She had already used it that day but it was one of those exhibitions that you could go in and out of. It was really nice of her to share that with me and the exhibition was fantastic.

Drove thrpugh Starbucks on my way to work a few days ago and when getting up to the window, was told that the person in front of me had paid for my coffee. So I paid for the person behind me. A nice little surprise.

Not quite the same, but close. Traveling one time with my mom, we were having breakfast at a restaurant with the long booth seats and small tables jammed together close all along. An older couple next to us struck up a conversation with us while we were eating and the man grabbed our bill to pay when the server brought it.

Twice I pulled up to a tollbooth and was told that the car ahead of me had paid for me. Once it was Christmas Day and the other time was just random. Unfortunately by the time I realized what had happened the other car had moved on and I couldn't find them to wave a thank you.

That was actually quite the thing for a while - glad to see it's still happening. It's a nice treat.

I was just reading the paper this am, and in a section called "Rant & Rave", there was this:

Rave To the kind woman who gave our Girl Scouts a handful of tickets to the fabulous "Cavalia" show while they were standing in the cold selling cookies. You provided a unique and special opportunity to girls and families who would otherwise never experience such a performance. Thank you!
    WOW!
