"I absolutely love being an amateur athlete, and to be a part of something so special that honors that is amazing."
Even with the prestigious company she now keeps, Franklin said she still sees herself "as a goofy 17-year-old."
The Regis Jesuit senior beat out finalists Darren Barnes, a weightlifter, and Liz Brenner, a four-sport athlete at the University of Oregon. Franklin is the 11th swimmer to win the award in its 83-year history, the first since Phelps in 2003.

It's hard in an Olympic year because there are so many worthy contenders, but Missy is a great winner. Plus her decision to stay amateur so she can compete for her high school and college next season really exemplifies the spirit of the the Sullivan Award. Congrats!
