http://www.teamusa.org/News/2013/Apr...van-Award.aspx"This award means a lot to me because of how much I've given up to be amateur," Franklin said at the awards ceremony hosted by the Amateur Athletic Union. "I absolutely love being an amateur athlete, and to be a part of something so special that honors that is amazing."
Even with the prestigious company she now keeps, Franklin said she still sees herself "as a goofy 17-year-old."
The Regis Jesuit senior beat out finalists Darren Barnes, a weightlifter, and Liz Brenner, a four-sport athlete at the University of Oregon. Franklin is the 11th swimmer to win the award in its 83-year history, the first since Phelps in 2003.
