Vancouver Day Trip Options?
I have to go to Vancouver for a job interview on Friday at 2:00 PM, problem is, I get there at 9:15 AM and my flight doesn't leave till about 6:45 PM, so this is just a very quick day trip for me. It's downtown so that's where I'll be likely to go straight from the airport, I'll be in business casual attire (polo and dress pants with nice shoes) so any ideas as to what I can do without getting too dirty/messy? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous/scared/terrified to all hell if I had to move to Vancouver (lived in Alberta all my life) but this could be a really good opportunity! Any ideas would be much appreciated!
First off, good luck!
Take the Canada Line from YVR to Downtown. Get an all day transit pass at the 7-11 near the baggage claim. You can't purchase an all day pass at the transit machine because they want tourists to pay a surcharge on the normal fare. It is a 20 minute ride from YVR to Downtown.
It is cold and wet this week. If your interview is downtown, you might as well go to Downtown. Vancouver City Centre Station is connected to a mall and is in the middle of
our business district.
And when you go back to the airport, remember to take the Canada Line to YVR and not to Richmond Centre (it is the same line, but there is a split once you get to Bridgeport Station--YVR takes you to the airport, Richmond Centre takes you to Richmond). It alternates and the signage is clear.
If it is nice out and you want fresh air, then go to Yaletown Station. Close to the water and there are tons of nice restaurant options.
Fair enough, I will remember that! I figured I would probably just stay downtown. My interview is in a place called The Landing Building? It's right on Water Street near the Cauldron, I've been in downtown before so I shouldn't have too much trouble getting around. I will bring my laptop and find some WIFI and just go somewhere and putz with it probably, maybe somewhere to plug it in? I dunno...
I'll remember to take Canada Line to YVR and not Richmond Centre heh.
Truth is, I have NO idea about renting an apartment and such, cost of living in Edmonton is significantly less than what it would be in Vancouver I'm sure so the renumeration would have to reflect that... I'd like to live in Kits or just outside of Kits, nothing fancy, hell even a basement suite would do for a swingin single like me, problem is, I have a large debt load to begin with so paying sky high rent isn't an option for me... Probably not more than $1000 at most anyways... Oh well, I'll worry about IF and when I get an offer, not beforehand! I'm sure I can figure out something when I get there!
The Landing Building is near Waterfront Station (the last station on the Canada Line). It's across the street from the SFU campus. There is a fairly popular restaurant called Steamworks that is located at the bottom of the Landing Building.
As for rent and stuff, I am less familiar with that kind of stuff, but do know that given its proximity to Skytrain, you have a lot of options.
Again, good luck!
I'm ok to manage around downtown on my own. I've been to Vancouver on numerous occasions before. There's lots of shopping and things to do. I will try and kill some time and hopefully find a good WiFi spot and maybe watch a movie or something if I can.
The prospect of moving and living there full time though, it scares the beejeebies out of me. I've never lived out of Alberta (or lived far away from home for that matter), I'd have to figure out how to get my stuff there, etc. I had only applied for giggles more than anything, I never in my wildest dreams expected to get a call... So all I can do is see how it goes and see what they say!
