I dunno, Boromir in the first LOTR movie comes close.
I love The Petrified Forest with a young Bette Davis and a dreamy Leslie Howard. I found it several months ago on Comcast's TCM OnDemand and I had no idea that it was a sad movie. Not til it was almost over did I realize it was going to be a sad ending. Howard's character is a lot likewhich leads me to another movie I love that's quite sad, A Tale of Two Cities with Ronald Coleman.Spoiler
Sydney Carton
I also truly appreciate Holocaust movies and am thankful they exist.

Star wars episode III: Revenge of the Sith was a very sad movie, and it was well done.
